Take a #Marketing role, for instance: it could be titled "𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭," "𝐈𝐧𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭," "𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭," "𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐚," or something entirely different. What job titles are common among your target employers? In your location? At companies of the size you're aiming for? “𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐲… 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨?” The exact same title can mean vastly different things from one company to another. This is one of the biggest challenges in the job application process. Candidates using a "𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒚" approach need to pay attention to what a job posting really means. It’s crucial for prospective employers to understand your unique 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 . We’ve all seen job postings with the same title but wildly different descriptions. Even for the same title, the responsibilities can differ significantly. In my view, it’s better to focus on understanding the needs of the company and aligning your skills to those needs. Job description vs. job ad. What's the difference? I'm glad you asked. Job descriptions are internal documents and legal definitions of what compliance needs for their records. Job ads are for external marketing to a candidate. It should entice them to learn more and to apply. You can write winning job ads with this framework: 1. Make it candidate-centric 2. Pait a picture for the candidate so they can see themselves in the role 3. Talk about the benefits they'll get As much as you'd like to make it about your company, first and foremost, don't. That's a common mistake I see people make. Candidates don't care. They want to know what's in it for them. Certainly mention that the company is great, but do it later in the ad. A job description = internal doc, a job ad = external doc.
