🚀 And we’re off! I’m so excited to announce the launch of www.USvGoogleAds.com! Google holds a mob-like control over the business model of the internet - digital advertising. They determine the flows of ad dollars, which publishers live or die, and how much advertisers should have to pay. And they do so by owning all sides of the ad supply chain (conflicts of interest, anyone?). Now, the DoJ and several states are challenging their dominance and anticompetitive behavior that has hurt publishers, advertisers, and consumers. This case is essential to follow to understand 1. why the internet sucks today and 2. what we can do about it. The goal of the site is to break down the arguments, key words, and juicy evidence that you’ll want to know as the case progresses. The adtech industry often gets portrayed as “complex” and “opaque.” But, that’s strategic. It’s because the big players, like Google don’t want publishers, advertisers, and consumers to understand what is going on behind the scenes. This site aims to correct that and we will be adding more content as the trial nears. "The recent ruling against Google highlights the risks of relying too heavily on one company for marketing. Google's dominance in the digital advertising space has made it challenging for other companies to compete, limiting options for businesses trying to promote their products and services," said CIO Robert Specian Jr. "This decision serves as a reminder for businesses to diversify their marketing strategies and avoid depending too much on a single platform. As the ruling encourages more competition and fairness, companies should explore various channels to reach their audiences and reduce vulnerability to changes by any one major player." DOJ's slides in the Google search case. ...and somehow what hit home with me was the last bullet with barely any additional insight - lack of transparency into queries. They reference 20% of spend on opaque search queries, but in my experience smaller advertisers could be over 50%. How can you effectively negate irrelevant terms if you can't see the terms your ad serves on?
