In our biggest conference to date, THIS Space 2024 hosted an array of speakers to discuss the leading research and evidence in improving the quality and safety of healthcare. Five research fellows from our fellowship programme delivered insightful lightning talks exploring varied subjects contributing to the advancing the field of healthcare improvement. Topics ranged from using big data for intelligent blood test ordering to co-designing quality improvement strategies in specialist eating disorder units, to addressing the challenges of national clinical audits in the stroke community, plus sharing learning from mixed methods approaches when examining variation in prescribing practices and implementing new service models for perioperative care for older people. The School of Public Health is proud to have 27 faculty and students attending and delivering their presentations including both, oral and poster formats at the American Public Health Association (APHA) 2024 Annual Meeting & Expo. Kiran Kamble will be presenting his poster on the topic: Between- and Within-Emergency Department Payer-type Variations in the Outcomes of an Emergency Department Visit Diagnosed with Pneumonia. This is an observational cross-sectional study applying a multinomial logistic regression model to determine the between- and within-hospital payer type variations in the outcomes for an ED visit for pneumonia by grouping the hospitals by their characteristics such as hospital ownership type, hospital urban-rural location, ED trauma center level, hospital teaching status, and hospital regional location. Several patient- and hospital-level variables were also used to identify the predictors of payer-type variations in the ED outcomes for pneumonia. Authors include: Drs. Stanford Medicine FS&P has wrapped a successful week of preparation for the upcoming trienanial survey by the Joint Commission. Led by Veronica Villalon and the EH&S team, an immersive 4 day mock survey of Environment of Care and Life Safety requirements and regulations encompassed teams from FS&P, PD&C, and various clinical care areas. The EOC-LS mock survey continues to be a best practice embraced by Stanford Medicine annually to ensure a safe and secure healthcare environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Equitable Breakthroughs in Medicine Development’s progress to enhance diversity in clinical trial participation continues with the addition of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Health 360x, which brings in 35 additional sites across 14 states, Southside Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and UAB Minority Health & Health Equity Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The selection of these sites builds on EQBMED’s community-centered approach to addressing systemic barriers to clinical trials and is funded by a grant from PhRMA. Congratulations to the team.
