Here’s a little fun history fact for you about building safety… Building codes were established to keep people safe in their workplaces and at home. But did you know that while "building codes" might sound like a recent innovation, their history dates back to around 2000 B.C. during the reign of Hammurabi of the Babylonian Empire?! In the U.S., modern building safety started as early as 1625, with the first codes addressing fire safety and roofing materials. By 1630, Boston was already moving away from wooden chimneys and thatch roof coverings to safer alternatives. As technology advances and materials change, our building codes improve and adapt, so it’s important to hire someone who stays up-to-date with them to ensure your safety. #BuildingSafetyMonth #BuildingCodes #Roofer #HeartfeltHomeImprovement

This must never, ever, happen again. The final report into the Grenfell Tower tragedy which killed 72 people in London has found that the tragedy was caused by decades of neglect at many, many levels by many parties. (An earlier report prepared by Dame Judith Hackitt has previously found that the UK building regulatory system was not fit for purpose.) The message to all involved in building across all countries is clear. Every single party from governments to regulators to building practitioners, product suppliers, building managers and others who are involved in building design, construction, operation, maintenance and regulation must do everything in their power to ensure that no other families have to lose loved ones as happened at Grenfell. #achitecture #construction #engineering #property #grenfelltower Bronwyn Weir Prof (Adj) Kim Lovegrove FRSN, MSE, RML. Overlooking Union Station and three blocks from the U.S. Capitol, the outdated office building located at 20 Massachusetts Avenue was set to undergo its transformation to become a mixed-use experiential urban destination. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding from scratch, the project team remodeled the complex to save time and resources, resulting in less environmental impact. They expanded the building to 523,000 square feet and increased the height and width. The building, completed in 2023, now includes eco-friendly and advanced technological elements for hotel guests and office users. DPR Construction carried out a detailed design and pre-construction planning using Bentley software, determining that using prefabrication would keep the project on track and reduce disruption to the local Washington, D.C. community. This approach cut two months off the construction timeline, which started in April 2022. By repurposing the existing 20 Mass structure, they eliminated CO2 emissions by 6,905 metric tons. The building’s 50-year history as office space for the federal government is now the past as its visual and experiential relationship to the Massachusetts Avenue corridor and the surrounding neighborhood has been transformed. #construction #engineering #infrastructure #washingtonDC #20Mass

Building owners and managers have a lot on their plates. Many are responsible for multiple properties and New York City has multiple laws impacting them. Compliance with these regulations requires strategies that demand owners’ and managers’ time and attention. SUPERSTRUCTURES is here to help by launching Restoration 101, an introduction to fundamental topics within our discipline: the essentials of the building envelope and parking structures, how and why they deteriorate, and how to navigate the restoration process for successful outcomes. We’re not only a leading professional firm in the field of exterior restoration; we’re a resource for building owners and managers—our clients and potential clients. We’re confident that the more building owners and managers know, the more they’ll appreciate SUPERSTRUCTURES’ approach to the art and science of exterior restoration. It’s based on construction documents that set the standard in the profession, utilization of leading-edge technology, and expert construction administration—an approach that’s made us the favorite of the most respected and demanding clients in the city. We’ll be adding more topics to Restoration 101 on a regular basis and welcome suggestions for future posts. https://lnkd.in/eMyTK782 #restoration #buildingowners #education

Why has there been no discussion about the environmental impact of demolishing a building of this size? Where will the material go? https://lnkd.in/ggsDM5kB Aside from the complete insanity of relocating this institution and then its abrupt closure for what appears to be a trumped-up excuse, the shear idea of demolition of this facility needs to be addressed. We need laws in Ontario to prevent the willy-nilly demo of buildings. It’s bad for the environment and very short sighted. Many more mature and evolved countries are stopping this type of demolition, solely on the basis of the huge negative environmental impact
