If you're a parent of kids in K-12 or in Higher Ed or just a normal "cat person with no kids", school safety is on your mind whether it's your kids or you're hearing about it on the news. No matter who you are, your immediate thought when you hear school safety is "weapons". And rightfully so. But school safety, for better or worse, is so much more than just weapons and shootings (damn, what a sentence to write). This blog covers the many incidents that encompass school safety, most of which include bullying/fights, medical emergencies, trespassing and more. And if you think a school resource officer has the ability to tend to all these in real-time, you may want to think again.

As we continue to outline, we need to help school districts focus on the multi-layered approach to school safety which include: 1. Physical Security, 2. Policy and processes, and 3. Engagement. Engagement is the final key piece to the multi-layered strategy. This ensures that all stakeholders involved in an emergency situation understand what will happen and what their roles are. This includes parents, law enforcement and members of the community in general. It's important for example, that all the law enforcement responses are coordinated, that parents, faculty and school administrators know what law enforcement needs to effectively manage a situation should it arise. Parents may also need help understanding and managing the behavioral health of their student children and we outline this in more details in this post. Let’s continue to never grow weary of attention to school safety and let’s keep our kids, teachers and staff safe. The St. Helens School District and local law enforcement use the I Love U Guys Standard Response Protocol for our schools. Part of being prepared in the event of an emergency is to practice drills to ensure that all protocols are followed and that students and staff know what to do in the event of an emergency. Tomorrow, Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 1:30 pm, St. Helens High School will conduct a Lockdown drill and controlled evacuation with the assistance of the St. Helens Police Department on site to support the drill. This is only a practice drill, and students will be accompanied by staff during the length of the drill. While safety drills are a necessary part of today’s school systems, we understand this disruption can interrupt classroom time. However, the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and as we stated above, we need to ensure that all protocols are followed and that students and staff know what to do should an event occur. We appreciate your cooperation. #Learn, Connect, Commit
