The real reason you struggle delegating and letting go (It may not be what you think) One of the hardest parts of stepping into a CEO role is delegating and trusting your team. I see it all the time in clients where they know they should let go of certain tasks, but they have a huge amount of internal friction in doing so. And I get it, when something is important or you are used to doing it, it’s easy to feel like you are the only one who can get it right. Or to fear that your team will make mistakes, which will just require more headaches or work for you. These are both very real concerns, but the unfortunate reality is that if you want to get the business to the next level, it’s a barrier you have to overcome. After all, if you cling on, it’s only a matter of time before you start becoming the bottleneck or dropping the ball on tasks that can only be done by you. That’s why in my experience when a leader struggles letting go, it’s generally for 2 reasons: 1) They don’t trust their team 2) They haven’t given them the opportunity to step up and learn Now the first suggests an issue on a foundational level that they haven’t done a good job of hiring the right people. The second however is a challenge we have to address head-on. Because yes you may know how to do a task better than anyone else. But if you want to get it off your plate, you have to take the time to effectively communicate and guide someone on the expectations of what needs to get done. A piece of that is also accepting that they probably will make mistakes. That however is part of the process and an opportunity to guide them on what to do in the future. I know it’s far from ideal, but unfortunately, unless you figure out how to clone yourself, you have no choice but to take the leap. That doesn’t mean just hand off tasks and hope for the best though. And instead, there’s nothing wrong with creating a transition period where you are still hands-on, overlooking and checking for mistakes. This in itself may be what you need to feel at ease, all while giving someone else the accountability they need to feel confident in what needs to get done. Regardless, if you are holding onto tasks you shouldn’t, then take this as a sign you need to figure out a plan and pull the band aid off to take that step.

Excellent points you’ve made Justin Wright and I can’t agree more. However, IMHO, there’s one factor that goes missing oftentimes - #ownership. Do you want to get your work done? Give people the ownership! It can supersede all other motivations. My thoughts.

As a team leader, this is how to stop a constant flow of questions that really don't need your attention. Use the phrase 'I trust your judgement' Yes, I know, that immediately fills you full of dread. You ask yourself "yeah that's easy to say, but what if..." Here's the thing, you need to get to that place where you are delegating responsibility and not tasks otherwise you are going to burnout and fail to deliver...its too overwhelming. Here's how to get there: 1. Set boundaries for your team, ensuring they understand their role's responsibilities, the types of decisions they can and should make on their own, and the general limits of their authority. 2. Encourage them to find their own solutions to day-to-day problems. Instead of answering questions, try saying, “I trust your judgment.” 3. The more successful your team members are in solving their problems on their own, the more their confidence will grow. Your time and objectives are important too, this approach gives you the best of both worlds, a team that grows and develops and an opportunity for you to focus on hitting the goals you have to achieve.
