We often have two choices. One - Do nothing (Ex. Yard work, going to the gym). Two - Try to do something. Anything. In this case, I'm going with #2. I have been inspired by 4 outstanding change-makers. Each of them possess insightful knowledge and raw passion for forestry. They are mostly retired but still want to have an active role in aiding BC forests. I am often not the smartest guy in the room but I recognize good ideas when I hear them. Each of them has brought proven ideas to forest fire mitigation. Ideas that would have a demonstrative effect on forest fires in this province. A small team wants to bring these ideas to light (See #2). We can with your help. Please understand. This is not criticism of the brave people who fight fires every year. This is about an opportunity to rethink our policies and processes proactively. Instead of reactive. The greatest organizations are constantly in search of more information to make themselves and the people within - better. I am sure the people who create policy around forest fire mitigation think the same. Nobody has all the answers. Here's the scoop: when a storm hits an island, it can wreak havoc on the landscape, stripping away soil and vegetation and leaving behind a barren wasteland. You see, mangroves have these incredible roots that act like natural sponges, trapping sediment and building up soil over time. So when a storm comes through and wipes out everything in its path, mangroves step in to stabilize the shoreline, prevent erosion, and kickstart the process of island restoration. Mangroves are also the ultimate matchmakers for marine life. Their tangled roots provide the perfect nursery habitat for all sorts of critters, from fish to crabs to birds. Following seasons of devastating wildfires in California, reforestation efforts are more critical than ever. Today, NFWF and USDA Forest Service announced $53 million in grants to protect and restore forests and watersheds in California. Awarded through the California Forests and Watersheds program, nine projects will focus on improving forest health and watersheds through post-fire restoration efforts, providing sustainable and lasting ecological benefits, protecting communities in and around federally protected public lands, and encouraging shared stewardship of USFS lands. Answer: Annually, around 130,000 tonnes of plastic find their way into the marine environment in Australia. Answer: Rivers carry plastic waste from deep inland to the sea, making them the main contributors to ocean pollution. It is estimated that 1,000 rivers are accountable for nearly 80% of global annual riverine plastic emissions into the ocean, which range between 0.8 and 2.7 million tonnes per year, with small urban rivers amongst the most polluting. It's the early 18th century, a time when settlers first set foot on these lush islands, eager to cultivate the land and create a thriving community. As these pioneers began tilling the soil, they laid the foundation for what would become the vibrant Bahamian agricultural landscape. Now, fast forward a bit – plantation owners from the American colonies sailed in, driven by the promise of fertile soil and that's where things take a turn... The settlers, in their pursuit of prosperity, unknowingly set in motion a chain of events that would impact the very lifeblood of the land, the soil. With significant demands and a lack of sustainable practices, the soil experienced degradation, and essential nutrients were depleted over time. Enter the present, where Blue Atlas has the opportunity to rewrite this narrative. This Sunday, May 26th,  I'll be back on my Canyon Bicycles GmbH steed to ride the 100+ miles of the Ride London-Essex sportive for Heal Rewilding of which I'm a charity Trustee. The reason I’m doing this is to give land back to nature, forever. It’s vital a because the UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, ranking 189th for biodiversity. This matters with 41% of animal species in decline and 1 in 10 UK species threatened with extinction.
