I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).

During a Partner Insights session, one of our summer interns, Aiden, asked David M. Kaplan, C.P.A., "How did you decide that BRC was the right sized firm, given the options of larger or smaller firms?" Here is David's Response:

Day 8 of the Summer Internship Competition at CIB ⭐ Today, I presented on Customer Rights in the Banking Sector. I emphasized the importance of knowing your rights, which include fair treatment, transparency, privacy, complaint resolution, and financial education. Understanding these rights empowers customers to make informed decisions and ensures they receive fair and transparent services from their banks. It was a great experience to delve into this topic and share insights with my colleagues at CIB. Looking forward to the next steps in this internship!

"During my internship at IPS Strategic Capital, I'm learning how to develop effective marketing strategies by analyzing data and market trends. I'm also gaining proficiency in using financial software tools that are essential for modern financial analysis. Additionally, I'm involved in helping create educational content that simplifies complex financial concepts. This experience is broadening my understanding of the financial industry and enhancing my practical skills."

Less talk, more action! We're calling on all fee-only and fee-based financial planning-focused firms to get involved and to help bring about change. Time is running out to be paired for dinner 2024 with qualified, motivated Black or LatinX interns. Last year, BLX Internship Program received more than 200 intern applications. This year they are on track to surpass that. The problem is they have nowhere near enough firms getting involved. This contradicts the No. 1 DEI challenge that we hear from financial planning and investment advisory firm owners — that they just don't know where to find diverse talent. The BLX Internship Program solves that problem handily: Apply to be a firm that hosts an intern next summer. The last day to apply to get involved is December 31, 2023.
