Our training sessions on our in-house EnviThan gas upgrading system ensure smooth commissioning and service โ beneficial for our customers worldwide and for our shared green future! ๐ ๐ This week, ten colleagues from Denmark, the UK, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Germany participated in a three-day intensive program on the EnviThan gas upgrading technology at our Saerbeck site. Here, we share ๐12 years of experience and insights from 100 EnviThan plants! โจ Training Highlights: ๐ Membrane Gas Upgrading Technology (led by Stefan Laumann): Experienced employees received in-depth training on the intricacies of the technology and processes. Another group underwent intensive training on the basics of membrane gas upgrading technology. ๐ Gas Warning Systems (GfG Gesellschaft fรผr Gerรคtebau mbH): The training included commissioning and monitoring gas warning systems to ensure no biomethane or CO2 is present in the air. Each room is equipped with sensors connected to our control system via an evaluation device, allowing for immediate shutdown if necessary. ๐ Gas Analysis System (Gas-Union GmbH): Our team learned how the gas analysis system monitors the gas composition in pipelines, analyzing CH4, CO2, oxygen, and hydrogen sulfide. These systems are connected to our control system, ensuring gas quality is maintained through predefined shutdown values. ๐ ๏ธ All process steps were practically explained on-site, resulting in consistently positive feedback from our international colleagues. The takeaway: hands-on training that resonates and trains safe and efficient handling of EnviThan technology. Through these comprehensive training sessions and the exchange of experiences from our international technicians in their service routines, we ensure that our EnviThan gas upgrading system operates reliably, safely, and efficiently worldwide. โ Many hydrogen project risks occur in the gap between offtake agreements and PPAsย โ ย The interplay between the hydrogen sale agreements, and the power purchase agreements for a green hydrogen project is fundametal to understanding who is ultimately responsible for many key risks for these projects. This becomes even more complicated if projects rely on multiple offtakers or multiple PPAs. ย Some of the risks that are allocated between these two contracts will be: โญ Pricing risk: high energy prices can significantly impact the cost of hydrogen production โญ Shape risk: power production will not always align with hydrogen consumer demand, and for green hydrogen this becomes even more important due to temporal matching requirements โญ Volume risk: prolonged periods of low wind and solar generation could lead to significant loss of hydrogen production โญ Operational risk: for both the electrolyser project and any renewable projects providing the power, there will be assumed levels of availability and a requirement to allocate responsibility for any losses due to equipment outages Any of these risks that are not allocated to the energy supplier, or the hydrogen consumer, will likely end up falling onto the project. Understanding and managing these risks will require robust modelling of both renewable assets and hydrogen demand profiles, to understand how the risk profiles fit together. Ammonia's potential as a carbon-free fuel, hydrogen carrier, and energy reservoir gives a chance to expand renewable hydrogen technology. With ammonia facilities, hydrogen is often produced on-site from a feedstock of fossil fuels. Natural gas is the most broadly used feedstock for steam methane reforming (SMR) plants. The PosHYdon pilot successfully kicked off its onshore testing at the InVesta premises in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. PosHYdon aims to produce #greenhydrogen on an operational gas platform in the Dutch North Sea. This will mark the first integration of three #offshore #energy systems, where #hydrogen will be transported to land along with gas via an existing #pipeline. ย The pilot is seen as essential for the development of large-scale green hydrogen production at sea, contributing significantly to the energy transition in the Netherlands and Northwest Europe. After this onshore testing period, the #electrolyzer will be moved offshore to the Q13a-A platform, located 13 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen. The first offshore hydrogen production is scheduled for Q4 of this year. ย Rene Peters, Business Director Gas Technologies at TNO and initiator of the North Sea Energy Program, said: โPosHYdon is a perfect example of system integration in the North Sea. In many studies, hydrogen is considered the missing link in the energy transition, with many talking about all the opportunities. But here, right off the coast of Scheveningen, it will actually take place later this year. PosHYdon is teaching us a lot about the next steps that need to be taken towards safe, large-scale green hydrogen production from wind at sea. Offshore green hydrogen production will enable large-scale wind farms to be developed far out at sea. Wind energy is directly converted to green hydrogen from demineralized seawater and can be transported through the existing or new gas infrastructure. As a result, offshore wind projects can be realized faster at significantly lower costs for society. I am therefore very happy that we can now test the complete installation onshore, in preparation for transferring it offshore for the final test: offshore green hydrogen production.โ ย In addition, PosHYdon will also participate in a pilot for Guarantees of Origin for green hydrogen and the upcoming migration towards European hydrogen certification. Electrified Haber-Bosch (HB) process: One key factor driving the development of green ammonia projects is flexibility in both the production process and the energy sources used. Transitioning from the conventional natural-gas fed HB process to green ammonia production through an electrified HB introduces several new challenges as well as opportunities for increased energy efficiency. The energy consumption of green ammonia production is dominated by hydrogen production. In the HB plant, the compression of inlet gases (hydrogen and nitrogen) accounts for the majority of energy consumption, and it is dependent on the pressure of the incoming hydrogen stream. Naturally, there are other configurations of HB plants, featuring various technologies for nitrogen production, compression, and product separation. Still, most models prioritize the configuration with the highest technology readiness level. Energy demand: Haber-Bosch plants are designed for 24/7 operation, and the typically sized HB+ASU (air separation unit) plant will require between 28 and 44 MW of 24/7 electricity supply. The energy supply for green hydrogen feedstock is significantly greater than the electricity demand for the HB process. CAPEX costs: The capital expenditure for a green ammonia production plant is dominated by the electrolyzer cost. In the case of 24/7 alkaline electrolyzer operations, the associated CAPEX costs are based on an assumed CAPEX of USD 183/kg of NH3/day for the HB plant and USD 800/kW for the alkaline electrolyzer, which can be considered as referential. With more optimistic assumptions about CAPEX costs of HB plants, the costs can be significantly lower. This illustrates that green ammonia production is greatly influenced by the energy demand and CAPEX costs of green hydrogen production. The cost of energy for hydrogen production will be a determining factor for overall costs. The positive news is that green hydrogen costs are decreasing significantly due to the availability of low-cost renewable energy and the rapid learning curve in the electrolyzer production industry, leading to electrolyzers with lower costs and higher efficiency. #keep_following_to_knowย ๐ย ย #sustainable_business #sustainability_way #petrochemical_with_me
