Having watched the Paralympics end over the weekend I am so struck by how far we still have to go in creating mainstream inclusion and empathy for all of us who share our planet. This year was only the first time in history that all 22 Paralympic sports had live broadcast coverage. Can you believe that? According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Organization, an estimated 1.3 billion people have a “significant” disability. So it is amazing really that these games are still not quite seen as equal - even though they represent over 15% of the planet. My new friend, Mark Colbourne MBE spoke to me about the power of belief and the power of coaching in shifting mindset, and indeed changing your own reality. Going from a broken back to breaking world records, Mark is the most high-energy reminder that it is the ‘belief’ and the self empathy (your own understanding of where you want to go) itself that is the true differentiator. If you believe you can, you will. Whether it’s a gold medal, a new business, or a personal fitness goal, look for the end point and work back from there. After the Paris 2024 Olympic Games hype thanks to the social media waves of reactions and memes, I was looking forward to the Paralympic Games start, being a big fan of amazing athletes like Bebe Vio and others, I sometimes found myself referring to Paralympic athletes as "superheroes" with all my good intention of recognizing how they can overcome challenges and achieve great results. This happened again yesterday while watching the performance of the Indian archer Sheetal Devi. Then, I read something really interesting about how this superhero labeling is a controversy that must be addressed. ***The following text is AI generated*** Paralympic athletes are pushing back against being labeled as "superheroes," arguing that while the term is often well-intentioned, it can dehumanize them, create unrealistic expectations, and overshadow broader issues faced by the disability community. Instead of viewing them as extraordinary, these athletes prefer to be recognized for their skills and dedication, just like any other athlete, while advocating for a more inclusive and normalized view of disability in society. The focus should shift from idealizing individual achievements to addressing systemic challenges and fostering true inclusion. ***End of AI-generated text*** I was deeply struck by how often, even when guided by the best intentions, we make mistakes that can hurt others or overlook broader issues. My favorite lesson from the Paralympics? Humor builds resilience, and shifts focus from limitations to empowerment. Take Assunta Legnante, the Italian visually impaired shot put and discus throw legend. Since her London debut, she's claimed three golds and three silvers. In Paris, she competed wearing a Mona Lisa eye mask - a masterclass in self-confidence and humor. Asked about the 2028 LA Games, Assunta responded: "I can't wait to go to and see the US because I have never been there. Obviously, I won't be able to 'see' America this time either, but I absolutely want to go to LA." This isn't just about sports. It's a life lesson. Paralympians like Assunta leverage humor to own their narratives and redefine challenges. They show us that humor isn't merely a coping mechanism; it's a powerful tool to connect, break down barriers, and build resilience. When used wisely, a good joke or a touch of self-deprecation can help us navigate life's complexities with grace and strength. "In the call room this morning, someone told me, ‘I watched you in 2012 and that’s why I am here.’ I really hope there are some girls at home who are doing the same because that’s what it’s all about. These moments create a buzz, a wave of support that seems to promise a better future for these extraordinary athletes. But what happens when the stadium lights dim, and the cheering crowds disperse? Despite numerous campaigns and government quotas, the harsh reality is that the lives of most Paralympians remain unchanged. We are quick to celebrate their successes but slow to offer them the acceptance and accommodation they genuinely deserve in our societies. The private sector, in particular, has a long way to go in this regard. Many corporate leaders have come and gone, and the river of time has continued to flow, yet the situation for our Paralympians remains stagnant. Their courage and tenacity deserve more than just applause during a sporting event; they deserve to be welcomed into all areas of life without hesitation or prejudice. I dream of a day when our society will extend its support beyond the sporting arena, a day when we can sit across the table from a Paralympian without a flicker of surprise or discomfort in our eyes. My Olympic ponderance As the Olympics get into full swing and I personally look forward to the Paralympics, it's crucial to reflect on the true meaning of "parallel." (Parallel to the Olympics). Currently, the Paralympics follow the Olympics, rather than running alongside them. This separation suggests a disparity in how we view athletes with disabilities compared to their non-disabled counterparts. Imagine a world where the Paralympics and Olympics happen concurrently, showcasing all athletes' achievements and abilities on the same stage.
