A recent study by the Light and Health Research Center - Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine has found that tailored lighting interventions can greatly enhance the sleep and mood of dementia patients. By emphasizing the principles of bright days, dim evenings, and dark nights, this research demonstrates the significant benefits of personalized lighting strategies. The study involved 14 cognitively impaired participants with sleep disturbances in assisted living and memory care facilities, employing various lighting systems to deliver circadian-effective light and improve patient well-being. Chair of HR/HCM/Marketing/Management Programs, Interim Assistant Dean of Business at Concordia University-Wisconsin
Alzheimer's/Dementia Awareness Day 7: FACT: Lack of sleep in middle age may increase the risk of dementia STORY: I am a certified Virtual Dementia Tour "guide" where I can give people an immersive experience of what it is like to have dementia. Many people have taken the VDT but have not had the full explanation of why you don the garb required for the experience. The headphones, for example, are not just to provide noise as a distraction, it is to mimic the "noise" the person with dementia hears when their brain is trying to send messages but there are no receptors to receive those messages. I had a caregiver go through the experience with the full explanation and debrief and she was in tears. We talked and she said she had no idea the crippling effects of this disease where you literally stand in a room confused, afraid, having no idea why you are standing there and we expect them to act normal. The headphones do mimic the noise variants that can happen due to dementia. If you ever watch someone and they all of a sudden appear startled and look around, it could be because they heard an unexpected noise, the frequency of the television volume changes slightly, or a chair scraped. When you are already living in a world of unknowns, those slight changes are terrifying. LESSON: Be patient with your family members or residents. Provide simple and clear instructions in ways they can understand. They may not be able to comprehend a 5-step instruction or even a 2-step instruction in some cases. Do not get frustrated, they mean no disrespect; they are more frustrated than you are. Love them through it. #ENDALZ, #endalzheimers, #alzheimersdisease, #alzheimersawareness, #alzheimersawarenessmonth #alzheimersassociation Alzheimer's Association Wisconsin Chapter
