Over the next few weeks, I want to explore the concept of inclusion through different perspectives, examining how we can use these viewpoints to further our understanding of inclusion and apply it in everyday life. Today is all about exploring inclusion as a policy. In this post, I discuss the specific policies we have here in Victoria that protect people from discrimination and promote inclusion across the state. In particular, I look at the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Under this Act, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person based on a protected characteristic in public life. Understanding these laws and policies is important in furthering our understanding of inclusion, why it matters, and how we should approach it in wider society. There are many different policies and pieces of legislation around inclusion for different industries, and most of them can be accessed via a simple Google search. These policies ensure an inclusive society for everyone. If you are an employer, business, or are responsible for promoting equal opportunity in any capacity, please consider checking out these policies. They are here to help you play your part in ensuring an inclusive environment for everyone.

Equality & diversity knowledge pulse session: lovely session about understanding equality and diversity, recognizing their importance, and applying them in the workplace. Only an hour but some good discussions and what makes us individual, protected characteristics, unconscious bias and the difference that reasonable adjustments can make to individual lives and the quality of a service.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It commemorates the day it was first proclaimed, on the 10th of December 1948, that every human being is entitled to certain inalienable rights. It is rarely a day marked by organisations, yet it is so relevant to the workplace, for example, equal pay, bullying, harassment, and discrimination. So, how can we build safe, healthy, and inclusive work environments? A good place to start is with 3 A’s: 1. Acknowledgement – We need to acknowledge the inequalities and inequities that exist in our society. This is often uncomfortable as it means recognising that we have certain unearned advantages that others don’t and requires reflecting on our own biases. 2. Accountability – Organisations have a duty of care and, as such, should reflect on their decisions and their impact on everyone within the workplace. Then take action to create equity. 3. Active Allyship – Ensuring that in our daily actions, we recognise that others may need support or help to amplify their voice in order to create safe, inclusive workplaces. We need to move past our discomfort to get to a point where we can all advocate for the rights of everyone. All of this helps move the agenda forward and ensure that there is “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”. Applying human rights in the workplace is essential to ensure a fair, equitable, and respectful working environment. Applying human rights in daily life involves recognizing and respecting the fundamental rights of all individuals, promoting equality, dignity, and justice in all interactions and situations. Here are some ways in which we can live with respect for human rights in our daily lives: Dignity: Treat all individuals with respect and dignity, regardless of their ethnic origin, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristic. Equality and Non-Discrimination: Avoid discriminating against others and promote equality. Do not judge people based on their appearance, beliefs, or any other personal characteristic. Freedom of Expression: Foster an environment where freedom of expression is respected, allowing people to express their opinions and thoughts openly and constructively.

🇨🇦 It's crucial to recognize that Black and Indigenous Canadians face unique challenges in the workplace. Shockingly, 55% of Black workers don't feel safe from discrimination, and 40% of Indigenous employees have experienced bias due to their identity. This is unacceptable. We must do better. Employers, it's time to create inclusive and equitable workplaces where everyone feels respected and valued. Let's listen to these voices, address systemic issues, and work together to eliminate discrimination and bias in all its forms. 🤝🌍❤️ #InclusionMatters #WorkplaceEquity #StandAgainstDiscrimination #SupportDiversity #MentalHealthWeek #CompassionConnects

🌍✊ Today, we commemorate Human Rights Day, a moment to reflect on the values that form the foundation of our shared humanity and a reminder that every individual's rights should be respected and protected. Human rights are not mere words on paper but a promise to every person, regardless of their background, to live in dignity, equality, and freedom. As professionals, we have a unique role to play in advancing these principles within our workplaces and communities. Let's use this day to: Educate: Educate ourselves and others about human rights. Knowledge is the first step towards creating meaningful change. Advocate: Advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces. Ensure that all voices are heard, respected, and valued. Act: Take tangible steps to support organisations and initiatives that champion human rights. Small actions can lead to profound impacts. Inspire: Inspire change through conversations, collaboration, and collective action. When we come together, we can move mountains. Today, we not only acknowledge the progress we've made but also recognise the work that lies ahead. Let's continue to strive for a world where every person's human rights are honored, and where justice and equality prevail. #HumanRightsDay #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #StandUpForHumanRights 🌍✊
