#Tuesdaytip I just got a call asking for a reference on a person who worked on my team. I haven't spoken to this person in over four years. I did not have a heads up to expect this call, nor do I know what she would like me to emphasize in a reference. BEFORE you provide someone as a reference, give them a courtesy heads up and ensure they in fact are willing to be a reference. Provide a copy of the role for which you are applying. Most of the time the people who reach out asking for my services are very reasonable. And then other times, someone proactively contacts me because I "would be a great fit" but then they not only need my CV and scope of work, they also need me to do three interviews, including one with the board, and fill out a questionnaire (the answers to which are already in the CV). And folks, I'll pass. There's plenty of work out there without doing a full job to get the job. If you are hiring a short-term #consultant, a three-round #jobapplication and #jobinterview process is not appropriate. Designate one or two trustworthy people to get on a single call. Have an informal, but informative conversation. And ask for references. You should know what you need to know from that. If your board is getting in the way of you hiring consultants, then you are going to need to have a conversation with your board--you, and not the potential consultant. #nonprofitmanagement #globaldev #proposalwriting #consulting

What's more frustrating than not hearing back from a job application? 😤 Getting a great interview and then being ghosted. 👻 Many people reach out to me asking what they should do after an interview because they try to contact hiring managers and never receive a response. Some have even claimed to be blocked. In today's economy, with the number of people seeking jobs, if they come prepared and give a good interview, it's just polite to let them know what's happening. I'm not suggesting a detailed report or a personalized letter. Hot take: I'm not a fan of the interview question "what is your greatest weakness?". The question itself isn't the best way to get to know a candidate and sheds no light on someone's ability or cultural add. Yet, I still talk to candidates who are getting this question regularly! Cookie-cutter questions invite cookie-cutter answers!! Instead, let's understand how people make decisions and carry forward when facing a weakness. This can be answered by staging a hypothetical situation or asking for examples of how someone persevered in the past.
