February was #Insurance_Careers_Month, a time often used to attract the attention of college graduates and #professionals from other industries to the benefits of working in the #insurance_industry. While I’m all for that hype, dare I say that there is a missed opportunity to talk about what experienced insurance professionals want? Your first #recruiting priority for insurance agencies should be #retention. A mindset focused on employee retention makes recruiting easier. “#Search #Motivations” are something my team hears multiple times a day from insurance professionals who want to explore the job market. While reasons are unique to each person, there are some common themes that should give you pause on where your recruiting and retention is vulnerable.

𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐈𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐈 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 17 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲. My journey began fresh out of school, with little knowledge about insurance. However, a chance encounter with a friend on a train led to my first job in this field, highlighting the significant role of personal connections in our professional journeys. Through the years, 𝐈'𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭. I've handled tough situations, worked through complicated insurance claims, and, most importantly, built strong, trusting relationships. One particular memory that stands out is from 2011 when I was able to assist a corporate client with a significant backlog of pending claims. Despite the challenges, I worked closely with their HR team and successfully cleared all claims within two months. This achievement not only resolved their issues but also laid the foundation for a lasting, trust-based relationship, underscoring the long-term benefits of trust in our industry. Fast-forward to June 29, 2023, and I received a surprising call. It was the HR manager from 2011 who had been trying to get in touch with me for months. After all these years of dealing with many other professionals, she wanted me to manage their insurance again. It was a truly humbling and unexpected moment. 𝐌𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬. 𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝.
