🚀 117 GW of #WindPower was installed in 2023 but this growth rate is still 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 to reach global targets to #3xRenewables by 2030 to contribute to 2050 net zero targets 💡 The #Time4Action is now 👇 Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Global Renewables Alliance, Corio Generation
📈 Record year for new wind installations, but we need ambition and courage to reach global targets 🎯 As Chair of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), our CEO Jonathan Cole wrote the foreword to its 2024 Global Wind Report, published today. 🚀 117 GW of wind power was installed in 2023 - up 50% on 2022 - according to the report. Last year was also the second-best year in history for offshore wind installations, with 10.8 GW total installed worldwide. ✅ Global cumulative wind power capacity (onshore and offshore) in addition passed the first 1 TW milestone in 2023. Despite strong growth, the current rate “still leaves us far short” of a global target to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, writes Jonathan in the report’s foreword. “Meeting the challenge of our times requires ambition and courage: The ambition to be bold and think big in the pursuit of a clean energy future, and the courage to make the tough choices to fulfil that ambition,” he says. “This means countries taking steps to derisk and accelerate deployment of renewables by prioritising early investment in the grid and transmission infrastructure and moving swiftly to streamline permitting processes. “It requires political leaders who are willing to spend political capital by sending clear signals to the market that the energy transition is inevitable, who pursue fiscal and practical measures designed to encourage supply chain growth, and who remove barriers to free trade that – whilst tempting in the short-term – are only likely to delay and increase the cost of the energy transition. “To incentivise new renewable energy projects, we need regulatory frameworks that measure the true value of the electrons we deliver, at a fair price, according to the full spectrum of services they provide.” 🖱️ Read the foreword and report in full on GWEC’s website: https://lnkd.in/e-evn7Z8 #WindPower #OffshoreWind #Time4Action

The transition to renewable energy sources, including tidal and offshore wind, requires knowledge of our marine environment. How do ADCPs and DVLs contribute to obtaining this knowledge? 🌊Like with many marine infrastructure projects, ADCPs are required to perform site surveys, gathering information on potential sites for offshore wind or tidal turbines. 🌊Maintenance of renewable energy infrastructure often relies on AUVs or ROVs, as well as knowledge of local currents, for the safety of personnel in and on the water. DVLs play a crucial role in providing this. 🌊Maximizing efficiency of tidal turbines in particular requires knowledge of the currents in an area, often in real time. ADCPs are suited for this job. G7 & G20 Policy | Energy & Climate | Political Analyst | Media Commentator | Author | Speaker | Researcher | Mom of Twins
After years of visiting Ft. Lauderdale, it’s impressive to see wind turbines installed on the rooftop of the Hilton on the beach. Although #Florida is the 3rd largest energy consuming state in the US (after Texas and California), #renewables currently constitute only 7% of the state’s supply mix. With the Sunshine State’s capacity to harness abundant #solar and #wind energy, is it time for Florida to implement a state-wide renewable portfolio standard and enable power-purchase agreements? These policies could serve to further accelerate investments in solar and wind across Florida - as they’ve done in other parts of the US - particularly for rooftop residential and commercial power generation. #renewableenergy #solarpower #windenergy #energysecurity
