Today, we mark 5 years since the establishment of our agency. As part of our ongoing commitment to support the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders, we’re investing $21 million over the next 12 months to extend free access to prevention programs across the state. These programs, including Deadly Choices, My health for life, Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) Country Kitchens, 10,000 Steps and Queensland Association of School Tuckshops Inc. Healthier Tuckshops, are designed to support manageable and sustainable healthy behaviour changes, focusing on improving nutrition and physical activity. Our commitment to health and wellbeing has never been stronger, and this investment continues the momentum and successes from our first five years, which includes: ⭐ Making healthy Happen 2032, the state’s strategy to prevent, reduce and treat obesity, and focuses on changing the systems and environments that hold obesity, poor diet and physical inactivity in place. ⭐ Gather + Grow 2023 – 2032, the state’s strategy to address food security in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities. ⭐ Pick of the Crop to over 32,000 students in more than 160 Queensland schools. ⭐ A Better Choice, A Queensland first approach to make it easier to access healthy food and drinks outside the home. ⭐ Podsquad, a free play-based learning app helping over 15,000 families create healthy habits ⭐ Clinicians Hub, helping clinicians to provide supportive and non-stigmatising weight management care. ⭐ Over 92,000 people engaged in suite of prevention programs across Queensland No matter who you are or where you live across our state, we are here to help you make healthy happen. It's Day 2 of National Public Health Week! #NPHW Today's focus is on healthy neighborhoods. I see this in my work A LOT. When our team conducts #needsassessments we often hear and see how the environments in which people live can create significant health inequities. This is because not everyone has the same access to: 🚰 Air and water free of pollution. 🏡 Safe places to live, without hazards like lead or smoke. 🚵♀️ Safe ways for everyone to be active, like sidewalks and safe places to bike. 🥗 Easy access to fresh, affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food. These are all critical to our health. When our environments and our neighborhoods are healthy, we have the building blocks for healthy lives. And when our environments and our neighborhoods are not healthy, it can be hugely challenging for individuals to overcome these obstacles to health by themselves. That's why #publichealth works every day to improve the environment on a SYSTEMS level, for EVERYONE. Whether it be advocating for smoke-free policies or bike lanes or healthier public school lunches, public health is all about making healthier environments and neighborhoods that benefit us all. But there are things we can each do to play our part in this collective goal! We can do things like plant trees to increase green space, get to know our neighbors for social cohesion, and support farmers' markets for fresh, local food. In our movement for change we serve as a collaborative hub for our nonprofit and direct service community for the power of plants. By collaborating with community partners, we’re working together to advance health equity, justice, and resilience regionally by prioritizing culturally relevant, bilingual plant-forward nutrition education and support so that everyone in our community can eat to thrive. We’re working to ensure direct service and community organizations, food access teams and policy makers are equipped with knowledge, resources and tools to prioritize access to foods and services that provide the most benefit to human health. This story has not changed during my 25 year career as a Registered Nutritionist. What constitutes healthy food has not changed. What has changed is that these basic foods have progressively become out of the reach of more and more people. Food insecurity and obesity are malnutrition. It continues to appear that decision makers are immune to sound nutrition science. It is difficult to listen when listening would mean the need to change the ideology which backs our policies and the actions we have already decided to take. Food poverty is just as much of an inconvenient truth as climate change. The policies of today determine the health of our collective future.
🥛 🥕 🍌 🧀 🥔 🍚 Healthy basics like frozen peas, potatoes, rice, carrots, milk, cheese and bananas have become too expensive for many families. That’s the finding from GP Dr Joanna Strom, who conducted the research as part of her Masters in Public Health at the The University of Auckland’s School of Population Health. "We need to think about how we can make a healthy choice an easier choice for everyone in New Zealand, especially for households with children," Dr Strom said. Her research, published in the Journal of the The Royal Society of New Zealand, found it was “virtually impossible” for families on a benefit to feed their children healthily. In an interview on Breakfast television this morning Dr Strom said: 👉 As children grow they need more food, which on top of the price of food going up, makes eating healthily extremely difficult. 👉 The cost of the very basics in a grocery basket for a family of four has gone up 50 percent over the past 6 years. 👉 Nutrition for children is so important because it can impact not just growth and general health but also their learning and their mental health. 👉 We need to look at policy to think about healthy food being more accessible -- from where food is produced in NZ, to how it's sold and where it's sold. 👉Food in schools is an amazing help for whānau who are struggling. 👉If housing costs are huge then that impacts how much money is left over for food so nothing can be done in isolation. 👉We need to have a health lens across all our food policies. New Zealand has an enormous hunger problem -- one in five children in New Zealand live in homes where food runs out.
