Sometimes integrations are NOT seamless...as I found out on a recent job application. After Joseph Jewell mentioned EarnBetter in the first part (not the last part) of one of his posts, I figured I'd give the service a try. EarnBetter is completely free to the applicant, and makes its money from its relationships with various clients. It generates an optimized version of any resume that you upload, and when you apply for a particular position it can optimize your resume still further and also generate a customized cover letter. Since I'm the curious sort, I uploaded my "identity/biometrics" resume to EarnBetter and let it do its work. The EarnBetter resume was nice, and I may even steal a couple of ideas to incorporate into my real resumes. Then I started searching for jobs. I was not qualified for the highest-ranking jobs on the list, but after looking at a few positions I found a position at "Company X" that was a good match. It's way outside of the identity industry, and a position I wouldn't have learned about otherwise. So I let EarnBetter customize my resume a bit further, create a cover letter, and then click the "Apply" button, which led me to..."Company Y." I had to create an account at Company Y, but once I did so, I manually uploaded the EarnBetter resume. EarnBetter didn't automatically pass my resume to Company Y, and Company Y never asked for a cover letter. I then clicked the "Apply" button, and Company Y said that I now needed to go to the hiring company's own website and apply. I got the spinning circle, and two minutes later...I still had the spinning circle. I remembered that EarnBetter's listing said that the job was posted a month ago, so I wondered if the job was still available. I went to LinkedIn's page for Company X and found no jobs listed. I tried going to the web page for Company X and couldn't find a jobs page, instead finding a listing of places to contact regarding former Company X businesses. Now perhaps this is an unusual situation and really has no bearing on how EarnBetter works, but when you're in the #jobhunt it's interesting to see how website X points to website Y which points to website Z. So if 10 job boards list an aggregated total of 1 million jobs, the truth is that there are probably only about 100,000 jobs there...not all of which are real jobs. Back to networking.

If someone talks to you about "the ATS", run away!!! The last time that talking about "the ATS" made sense was 25 years ago in the late 90s. But there are plenty of university career center and job coach Rip Van Winkles that still make plenty of money and get plenty of attention peddling this obsolete junk advice. Wake up! The 90s are over! ATSes were invented in the 1970s and were basically electronic records. They'd type all your information and a human would look you up by name and read the info in your record. No searching. But ATSes improved. In late 1990s, the Internet craze was in full swing. Early job websites would have you upload your resume, it'd deconstruct your resume into fields like "name" and "skills" and they'd put those into "the ATS". Then, recruiters and hiring managers would do searches against it that boil down to "SELECT resume WHERE 'Java' IN skills". If your resume had a really complex layout with nested columns and tables to make it all pretty, "the ATS" might get confused and accidentally enter your name, like "John Smith", in the "skills" column. So, even if you had Java all over your resume, the "SELECT" statement would skip your resume because neither "John" nor "Smith" matched "Java". Your resume would never be returned in anybody's search. Your resume had been "filtered out" by the ATS. But ATSes improved. In 1999, Lucene was invented and other "full text search" code was written. Now, instead of deconstructing your resume into fields, the ATS saved the entire text of your resume and it was searchable. So, even if your resume had a really complex layout with nested columns and tables to make it all pretty, recruiters and hiring managers still found your resume if it had "Java" anywhere on it. So, by, say, 2005, almost all the ATSes used full text search and no longer "filtered out" resumes. Now, a human would do a search, find your resume with "Java" somewhere in it, glance at it and maybe put it aside for a phone call or flip to the next resume (with "Java" somewhere in it). But, ever since, resume experts had their boogeyman. "The ATS! It'll filter out your resume! It'll eat it! It'll throw it away! Listen to me! Pay me to revise your resume so the ATS won't throw it away!" If you are listening to them and, even worse, taking their advice, you are throwing your time (and money) away. It won't help you a job. ATSes don't work that way anymore. And haven't worked that way for decades. So, as the knights say in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Run away! Run away! Run away!"

The paradox of the job search application process... Quantity of application vs Quality of applications. Quantity. You'll see posts where folks have submitted hundreds of resumes to land a job. Quality. At the same time, I'm asking you to reverse engineer EACH and EVERY application. Each one takes such a long time to do! In this market, it seems that it's not Quantity OR Quality it's Quantity AND Quality How can I possibly reach QUANTITY? While producing that level of QUALITY? While not spending eons to land a job? Time is not infinite. You have to pick! Quality OR Quantity? What if you could do both? Just not right away... How? The key is to start with one. Then progress to the other. My suggestion is to start with quality first. Let's take it step by step. Make sure your resume is a clean format. Keep your experience and administrative sections. Blank out the bullets. For most folks, the most time-consuming part of reverse engineering a job posting is coming up with examples that are related to the bullet. Here's a bullet for and IT security analyst: (grab a bullet from the job of your choice) "Identify, assess, and provide recommendations towards mitigating data-related security risks along with developing data-related policies and procedures" Have you done this? All or in part? Where did you best demonstrate your ability to do that? Your last work place? Volunteering? School? Let's say it was your last job. Paste it there. (make sure the formatting holds - if you're not familiar with "format painter" then look it up, as it will help speed up your formatting) Then elaborate and expand on it. Perhaps split it. "Identified and assessed data-related security research through documentation of current processes and research of leading practices" "Provided recommendations and supported the development of corresponding policies and procedures" There! We've addressed that bullet. The first time might take 10 minutes for you to think about a bullet. At 15 bullets on a job description, that first reverse engineered resume might take you 3 hours to do. BUT The helpful part is that you don't have an infinite number of experiences. That's not to be critical of you. It's the truth. When you respond to answers, you'll probably have 10 good experiences that you can draw from. The experience you use for stakeholder management might be the same as for leadership. Your problem solving example might be the same as your example on how you've used SQL. So when you come up with those examples, the next few will be faster. Then it's a matter of tweaking them to fit the role. So 3 hours takes 2.5, 2.5 hours takes 2, and soon enough, you'll have quality AND quantity and overcome the job search application paradox!

I talk a lot about the importance of numbers and metrics on resumes. But not all numbers matter. Not all numbers belong on your resume. Let me give you an example. This is a bullet point from a client's resume. "Improved 12 data entry processes which increased productivity of service center staff by 25%." ---------- Is the 25% important? Absolutely! That's an outcome metric and that should definitely stay as part of the bullet point. But what about the 12 data entry processes? Do you honestly care how many data entry processes were involved? Does it matter if it was 1, or 10, or 12, or 100? Nope. Not in my opinion. When I read that my initial thought was “I'd be more interested in knowing WHAT TYPE of data entry processes than in how many.” ---------- Anyway, after some back and forth with the client to gather additional information, here's the revised bullet point: "Increased productivity of service center staff by 25% by collaborating with Human Resources Service Center and other stakeholders to improve data entry processes, using Six Sigma and LEAN strategies". ---------- In the end, I decided not to include the types of processes because I felt WHO my client collaborated with and WHAT STRATEGIES were used were more important than the types of processes. But if I hadn't had that information then I would have included the types of processes. In that case, the bullet point would have read: "Increased productivity of service center staff by 25% by improving data entry processes such as new hire data entry form and entry process, pay increase process, and leave of absence return to work process". Either way, do you miss the number 12 in the revised bullet points? I don't. I don't see any way that it adds value. ---------- In case you’re wondering, these are numbers that I typically include in client’s resumes: ➡️ Any sort of outcome metric ➡️ Number of people worked with, managed, trained, taught, mentored, and/or impacted ➡️ Number of clients/customers worked with/impacted (these can be people or companies) ➡️ Anything to do with money ---------- Beyond that, it depends. For example, this client oversaw a call center. In that case, the number of calls received per day seemed like an important number to include. So while I wish I could give you a definitive answer on what numbers to include and which to leave off, I can’t. Not when there are millions of different types of jobs. The best I can say is to focus on including numbers that show that you had a positive impact and that you were doing big and important things. And leave the rest off...

Just implemented a slick guided walkthrough for the dashboard page in Resume Wrangler. When a new user creates an account, they will be flagged in the PostgreSQL database as new. This flag will trigger a walkthrough to be displayed exclusively to new users for each section of the application. The walkthrough will guide new users through the features and functionalities of each section, ensuring they are familiar with the application and feel confident using it. This feature could also be utilized in the future to introduce new features or updates to my user base. Upon logging in, users will be presented with a walkthrough of the new feature or update, ensuring that they understand how to use it and can take full advantage of it. This should help to keep users engaged with the application and ensure they are getting the most out of its features. #resumewrangler #guidedwalkthough #useronboarding

Last week I said you shouldn't list soft skills on your resume. That instead you should provide proof or evidence that you have that skill. This is one of the comments I received on the post: "I'm a bit confused because aren't many resumes pre-screened for key words like oral communication and leadership? If I don't have those words will I even make it in the door for a human to look at my resume?" My answer is this. No, that's not how things work. Resumes are not pre-screened for keywords like oral communication and leadership. Nor are they prescreened for hard skills like SQL or Python or Salesforce. Humans review resumes. Not bots. There are some Applicant Tracking Systems that can RANK resumes based on keywords that recruiters input into the system. But that's a ranking, not a screening. Your resume is still in the system where a human can review it. And by the way, if the recruiter is using an Applicant Tracking System that can rank resumes, they're going to input things like job titles, hard skills, and education. They're not going to input something like oral communication or leadership. Bottom Line: You need a resume that shows that you have the skills, experience, and qualifications for the job. That's what a HUMAN will look for. And you need a simple format so those skills, experience, and qualifications are easy to find on your resume. ---------- Need help creating a resume that will make you stand out?
