🛑 WORLD DAY AGAINST TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS 🛑 Today marks the 🌍 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons (WDAT) 🌍. This year, the UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime) is using the WDAT to highlight the need for ‘accelerated action’ to end child trafficking. Globally, the UN estimates that 1 in 3 people who experience human trafficking are children 🚸. Child trafficking is a form of modern slavery and refers to the recruitment or movement of children within or across borders for exploitive purposes. Child trafficking can happen here in Australia. It is important that businesses, civil society organisations and other organisations know how to seek help if they identify red flags for child trafficking, including by contacting the Australian Federal Police as well as non-government organisations who work with modern slavery survivors including Anti-Slavery Australia, The Salvation Army or the Australian Red Cross. Businesses can also take other steps to manage their potential involvement in child trafficking risks in their operations and supply chains in Australia (recognising involvement in child trafficking may also be a risk overseas) by: 🟡 Including the risks of child trafficking in wider modern slavery or human rights risk assessments. For example, businesses involved in providing travel and accommodation services should consider the risks that third parties could use their services to perpetrate child trafficking. Businesses engaging lower skilled workers through third parties should also consider risks that these workers could include children who have experienced trafficking, particularly in sectors where there may be limited visibility of working conditions. 🟡 Considering how to integrate a child-sensitive lens to grievance mechanisms and modern slavery response plans. For example, this could include considering the barriers that might prevent a child accessing a grievance mechanism and how to respect the rights and needs of any children who might be identified by a business as having been trafficked. 🟡 Ensuring relevant staff, including those who may be involved in engaging with higher risk workers or members of the public (such as customers using travel and accommodation services) understand the red flags for child trafficking and how to safely report concerns. 🟡 Considering how to communicate work to address child trafficking risks to stakeholders, including through modern slavery statements and other reporting. #WDAT #modernslavery #bizhumanrights
