In honor of BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month, it's crucial to highlight the unique mental health challenges faced by BIPOC individuals in the workplace. Richard L. Taylor Jr. underscores the importance of fostering supportive and inclusive work environments for BIPOC employees. By creating safe spaces for dialogue, ensuring access to culturally competent mental health resources, and actively supporting diversity, organizations can make a significant impact. Let’s commit to: 1. Providing equitable access to mental health resources. 2. Educating ourselves and our teams about cultural competency. 3. Encouraging open conversations about mental health without stigma. 4. Supporting BIPOC voices and experiences. Together, we can build workplaces where everyone feels valued and supported. Read more from Richard on our blog on how we can make this change happen. #BIPOCMentalHealthMonth #InclusiveWork #MentalHealthMatters

This breaks my heart. Employees are in crisis ⬇. I'm beyond grateful my workplace prioritizes its people. 💚 Everyone does not have that privilege, or the option to leave for an organization that cares. ⚪ Well over half of employees (57 percent) are experiencing at least moderate levels of burnout. ⚪ In 2023, 69 percent of mental health-related leaves of absence were taken by women. ⚪ Employees are 51 percent more likely to feel depressed at work than they were pre-pandemic. ⚪ Anxiety is the number 1 presenting issue reported by U.S. workers, topping depression, stress, relationship issues, family issues, addiction and grief. https://lnkd.in/eZ9CsgUA

🌍 Today is World Mental Health Day 💚, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and advocating for the well-being of people everywhere. In the disability services sector, this is especially important. Supporting individuals with complex needs can be both rewarding and emotionally challenging for staff. As a leader in this field, I’m committed to creating a workplace culture that prioritises the mental health of my team. Here are some of the ways we support our staff at The Nesting Tree: 💬 Regular Check-Ins: We encourage open dialogue and active listening, making space for our team to share their experiences, challenges, and successes. 🌱 Professional Development and Training: Providing ongoing training enhances skills and empowers staff to feel confident in their roles, reducing stress and burnout. 🏞️ Wellness Days and Flexible Schedules: We provide flexible schedules and wellness days so staff can prioritise self-care. 🤝 Peer Support and Team-Building: Creating a supportive environment where colleagues can lean on each other is essential for fostering resilience and a sense of community. Let’s continue to break the stigma around mental health and build a culture of support, understanding, and compassion in every workplace. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #DisabilitySupport #EmployeeWellbeing #Leadership #TeamSupport

Research by The Hartford and NAMI shows only 36% of talent feel comfortable discussing mental health, compared to 43% of white colleagues. While progress is evident, there's still a gap in positive work experiences across racial groups when it comes to ensuring individuals feel they have an open, inclusive work environment that supports conversations about mental health. This is where OneTen steps in. We're dedicated not only to helping talent secure family-sustaining careers but also ensuring these careers offer the necessary benefits and resources for mental wellness. Addressing the disparities disproportionately affecting talent of color, dismantling mental health stigmas, and cultivating healthy workplaces where talent from all backgrounds can thrive are all critical to a more positive future workforce. I help companies who give a damn about their workforce foster a culture of connection, belonging, and joy to boost well-being at work, home, and community spaces.
Culture, ethnicity, and race all play a role in the way that each person experiences the world. July is BIPOC Mental Health Month, a critical time for us to acknowledge and address the unique struggles and disparities that BIPOC employees face regarding mental health and well-being. Here are 3 ways to get curious and support BIPOC mental health at your workplace: 🔊 Promote Awareness BIPOC employees experience unique challenges and disparities in mental health. It’s essential to recognize these differences to provide adequate support and foster an inclusive workplace environment. 👂🏽 Foster Open Conversations Creating a workspace where BIPOC employees feel safe to share their experiences is crucial. Managers should be equipped with the tools to support culturally competent conversations and show genuine empathy and compassion. 🔆 Invest in Connection Encouraging the formation of support groups and partnerships within the workplace can provide a safe space for discussing mental health needs. These groups can also organize events and resources to support the well-being of BIPOC employees. Let's promote awareness, foster honest conversations, and invest in opportunities for connection and support within our workplaces. #BIPOCMentalHealth #mentalwellbeing #workplacewellness #ProtectBIPOCHealth #StigmaFeedsOnSilence

So, why such stark differences in perspective between the generations? It could be because Gen Z has grown up in an era where open discussion of mental health is more normalised, whereas Baby Boomers were often conditioned to internalise such issues. As a result, younger employees may feel more comfortable seeking support and discussing mental health challenges at work. This is why we need to ensure we approach mental health support in the workplace in a way that’s inclusive, comprehensive, and responsive to the needs of all employees, regardless of age or work arrangement. Is this something you've considered? #MentalHealth #WorkplaceMentalHealth #MentalHealthAtWork #wellbeing #EmployeeWellbeing #inclusion #InclusiveSupport #HR #ALittleBitOfHR

Today is R U OK? Day, but for many of us, including Autistic people like myself, the question goes much deeper. It’s not enough to simply ask, #RUOK? when the environments we work in are often far from supportive. In my own experience, I’ve worked in places where mental health and well-being initiatives felt tokenistic, with no meaningful follow-through. As the Draft National Autism Strategy points out, Autistic people are 9 times more likely to die by suicide and 2.5 times more likely to experience depression than the general population. These stark realities demand more than lip service; they demand meaningful action. Organisations need to commit to creating truly psychologically safe workplaces. This means not just asking if someone is OK, but also implementing long-term, meaningful support systems for mental health and wellbeing. For Autistic employees, this includes: 1️⃣ Accessible recruitment processes that don’t exclude talent; 2️⃣ Workplace environments that support neurodivergent employees; 3️⃣ Proactive mental health policies that address the unique needs of those who are at a higher risk of poor mental health outcomes. Let’s make R U OK? Day a catalyst for real change, where organisations are held accountable for the well-being of all employees, not just on one day, but every day. It’s time to stop ticking boxes and start creating workplaces that genuinely support mental health and wellbeing. #RUOKDay #MentalHealthMatters #PsychologicalSafety #AutismInclusion #WorkplaceWellbeing #Leadership #Governance #Strategy #Inclusion #RUOK? #Autism #ASD

Today on World Mental Health Day, the theme of “Mental Health at Work" highlights the vital connection between mental health and work. 60% of the global population are in the workforce, meaning that they spend a large portion of their time there. Therefore, urgent action is needed to ensure that the work environment prevents risks to mental health and protects and supports mental health at work. As employers, we must support our workers in the best way that we can, and provide the necessary resources for a healthier, more inclusive work environment. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is long overdue to address the stigma associated with mental health. Many workers (73 percent) say their employers say they care about employees’ mental health—but their statements aren’t backed up by appropriate actions: - 39 percent of workers think their organization only pretends to care because it’s trendy. - 41 percent of workers say an employee who talks about their mental health is gossiped about. - 35 percent of workers say an employee who talks about their mental health is less likely to get promoted. We all struggle with mental health to different degrees, either daily or at different times in our lives. Let's end the stigmas, and begin to support one another.
