“When you gerrymander people’s power away, you can’t elect candidates of choice,” says Ashley Shelton, executive director of Power Coalition for Equity and Justice, a Louisiana organization that focuses on voter outreach. “We understand the power of gerrymandering: It’s not that Black people don’t care or don’t want to vote, it’s that the power of their vote has been lessened.”

Thoughtful! Good lessons here. Check yo’self before you wreck yo’self.
For decades, Texas effectively denied Black citizens the right to vote, through the "white primary" and other artifices, and Texas courts went along with it, waxing eloquent on the right of private association. Until Lonnie Smith, a dentist from the Fifth Ward of Houston, went to court in the 1940s, represented by a young Thurgood Marshall. #Juneteenth #FiveMinuteLaw https://lnkd.in/gWrCBcQk

While I believe the government is responsible for ensuring voters are legitimate, these practices should be abolished, and a fair and legal process should be implemented to ensure citizenship, residency, and one's legal status to vote. This must be a “Law of the Land” issue holding local governments and officials accountable for maintaining order. We manage to hold a Census; we can surely manage this. Between Social Security, banking and loan information, licensing (driver's license, business license, etc.), and safety net programs, there is almost no reason our government can't reasonably establish the residency of a citizen and their right to have their vote counted well in advance of ANY election. The other thing that must be addressed is the “vigilantism” practices in all cases involving where the government is responsible for “law and order” should be abolished and dissuaded in a manner that holds politicians and government officials accountable for inciting “mob rule” (as Lincoln so judiciously spoke) tactics. This is no way to lead and maintain law and order in our Republic and democratic nation. It directly tears down the legal systems that make America great for real.

Today, we joined Black voters, NAAAP North Carolina, Common Cause North Carolina, and Hogan Lovells in a step toward justice. We filed a lawsuit challenging North Carolina's gerrymandering that directly attacks the rights of Black North Carolinians. This joint effort, represented by attorneys from Southern Coalition for Social Justice and Hogan Lovells, aims to address the various harms inflicted by these unfair district maps: - Unconstitutional intentional discrimination against Black voters in Senate, House, and Congressional maps. - Vote dilution violating the Voting Rights Act in North Carolina’s Black Belt within Senate and House maps. - Intentional vote dilution impacting Black electoral power in Congressional Districts 1, 5, 6, and 10. - Racial gerrymandering evident in Senate Districts 7 and 8. - Violation of the one-person, one-vote principle in the Senate and House maps. 🔗 For more: https://lnkd.in/emig8xhU

Our democracy is evolving, and it impacts us all. Louisiana's new congressional map includes a second majority-Black district, marking a significant win for Black voters. The move addresses concerns of diluted Black voting power and helps amplify Black voices so that policies are crafted and implemented equitably. The week-long special session focused on redistricting to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act, ending a long legal battle and emphasizing the importance of state-led decisions over federal intervention. Honoring #BlackHistoryMonth by recognizing the resilience and engagement of Mississippi's Black voters. Despite historical challenges and voter fatigue, this year marks a turning point as five Black candidates run for statewide office. Repealing a discriminatory constitutional provision in 2020 paves the way for change, inspiring hope and encouraging a rebuilding of the Black community’s voting base. Challenges persist, including voter roll purges and felony disenfranchisement, but the community is determined to overcome them. The upcoming election is not just about casting a ballot but translating engagement into meaningful action. Read full article: https://bit.ly/3T4L31m

We are thrilled to announce a monumental victory for Black Voters in Louisiana! BVM proudly stands united with plaintiffs Dorothy Nairne, Reverend Clee Ernest Lowe, Dr. Alice Washington, Steve Harris, and the NAACP, alongside our incredible counsel, the ACLU. The court found unjust manipulation in the Louisiana Maps, limiting Black Voters' participation and hindering their ability to elect representatives reflective of their choices. A special shoutout to our former state Organizing Manager, Omari-Ho-Sang, and Regional Organizer, Keturah Butler Reed, for their powerful testimony and tireless collaboration with our courageous Louisiana partners. Together, they challenged racially gerrymandered state maps, leading to this crucial decision. Despite being 33% of Louisiana's population, Black Voters face ongoing inadequate political representation at state and federal levels—an injustice that must be rectified. At Black Voters Matter, our commitment is unwavering. We fight for increased political representation, the dismantling of outdated laws reminiscent of the Jim Crow era, and the ushering in of new policies fortifying constitutional, political, and economic rights. While this victory is a significant step forward, our battle doesn't end here. Diligence is key as we strive for more rights—in the courtroom, at the ballot box, and in the streets. In the face of persistent assaults on our rights, our motto for the 2024 electoral season resonates: "We Fight Back." Together, we press on for a future of equality, justice, and true representation. ✊🏿 https://lnkd.in/gjPUD_Cs
