Lesson 12 of #100daysofwriting It's often said that the hardest part is starting, but once you do, you'll find yourself exactly where you need to be. As you write, you begin to uncover your unique voice. Each sentence, each paragraph, brings you closer to understanding your own perspective and style. How you view the world and how you want to share that vision with others comes to its full potential. Writing daily has its unexpected rewards. One of the greatest rewards is it connects you with a community of fellow writers, readers, and thinkers who support and inspire each other. Your first draft doesn't have to be perfect. In fact, it rarely is. Writing is a process of continuous improvement, where rewriting and editing are as crucial as the initial creation. The Joy of Writing: Why We Create and Share Our Stories Today, I want to talk about the joy of writing. Why do we create stories? Why do we share them with others? What drives us to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard? For me, writing is a passion that sparks joy, creativity, and connection. It's a way to express myself, to process my thoughts and emotions, and to tap into my imagination. We write to: - Make sense of our experiences and the world around us - Leave a mark, a legacy, and a piece of ourselves - Connect with others, to share our perspectives and empathy - Explore our creativity, to experiment and innovate - Heal, to process and overcome challenges When we share our stories, we: - Open ourselves up to vulnerability and connection - Create a sense of community and belonging - Inspire others to share their own stories - Build bridges of understanding and empathy - Leave a lasting impact on our readers and listeners The joy of writing lies in the creative process, the connection with others, and the impact we can have. So, let us continue to write, to share our stories, and to inspire others to do the same. For in the words of Toni Morrison, "If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, you must write it." Thank you. Keep going. Writing can feel very uncertain. So uncertain that it’s amazing that anything gets finished at all. The human brain hates unpredictability. It likes straight lines, but a creative endeavour is anything but. In many ways, creativity runs contrary to our certainty-obsessed brains – which is why you need to find a way to keep going if you don’t want your brain to win. For the last year Chris Smith and I have been writing a Substack newsletter called Breakthroughs & Blocks. Tips on a Monday, a more general column on a Wednesday. But it’s been hard. Some things have worked while other things haven’t. There have been plenty of blind alleys and wrong turns. It certainly hasn’t been one of those meant-to-be-inspiring-but-actually-demoralising ‘how I make $10k a week on Substack’ stories that you often hear – not at all! But we kept going. We promised to ourselves that we’d do it to a schedule for a year. Two of us write it and we share an office and a life so that helps (sometimes). We’ve had positive feedback and it’s been an absolute joy to talk to writers in the comments and build a small community. That has kept us going when we were close to giving up. We kept our promise to do a year and have learnt a lot from that experience. Now we’re looking ahead to year two and how we can continue to help writers.
