#CNIPA to promote patent industrialization in universities and research institutions The China National Intellectual Property Administration(CNIPA), together with relevant departments, has jointly formulated a work plan to promote patent industrialization in universities and research institutions, according to news released on Tuesday at a regular press conference. Wang Peizhang, a senior CNIPA official, said that there is a wide existence of dormant patents in Chinese universities and research institutions currently. As of the end of 2023, the number of valid invention patents owned by domestic universities and research institutions reached 794,000 and 229,000 respectively, accounting for a quarter of the total patents in China. There is an urgent need to promote the industrialization of these patents. Photo: web For more: https://lnkd.in/gDbbD2e4

Great to see the European Patent Office support individual inventors and small organisations by offering reduced fees. There are limitations on who qualifies (as explained in our article) but this initiative should encourage greater engagement with the European patent system. #EuropeanPatents #MicroEntities #FeeReduction

Do patents promote or obstruct scientific progress? The impact can be negative in highly competitive industrial sectors where the primary goal of patenting is to block competition. A "patent thicket" arises from multiple overlapping claims and makes commercial exploitation very challenging. Such technology may seem like a black hole that should be avoided as much as possible. The most troubling examples come from medical science where a "patent thicket" may result in a promising life-saving drug getting lost in the black hole. Nevertheless, a patent is a tool to make an invention public and thus contribute to the progress of science. Patent applications become public 18 months from filing, but some companies opt to disclose in scientific journals shortly after filing. Early disclosure is a practical way to reduce a risk of the "patent thicket" phenomenon because the public patent examiner has a better chance of finding relevant prior art. Considering the facts that i) Patents indicate the most relevant technology to industry, and ii) more than 80% of the information in patents is never published elsewhere, it seems likely that patents are an undervalued source of information in scientific progress. #intellectualpropertyrights #patent #patentthicket #scientificprogress

Special thanks to the University of Antwerp for hosting this event and to #Bepiug for inviting Dennemeyer to discuss AI in patent searches. 🚀 Reflecting on a Transformative Session at BEPIUG We had the pleasure of delving deep into the fascinating world of AI with our very own Peter Erdödy and Sylvain Barone. It was an enlightening session where we explored the intricate layers of AI technology—from Machine Learning to Deep Learning and Transformers. 🧠 Unveiling the Magic Behind Octimine Our discussions centered on how our patent search and analytics platform, Dennemeyer Octimine, harnesses these technologies for diverse use cases. We uncovered the secrets of the AI "black box," learning how we can shape our results through iterative work, enhancing both accuracy and relevance. 💡 Beyond the Technology Moreover, we discussed the broader implications of integrating AI into our workflows. The potential for significant process and productivity improvements was a hot topic, providing us with a glimpse into what the future holds for the IP workforce on a larger scale. 🔍 Looking Ahead This meeting was not just about understanding AI but also about envisioning its future impact on the intellectual property sector. We are excited to continue this journey, pushing the boundaries of innovation and efficiency. #AI #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #Transformers #Innovation #IP #DennemeyerOctimine #BEPIUG
🌟 Today is World Intellectual Property Day! The perfect opportunity to stress the importance of IP literature as a starting point to develop innovative technologies and applications. In this perspective, our IP team was proud to host The Belgian Patent Information User Group (BEPIUG) spring meeting this week. Steven Vermeir had the pleasure to give the attendees insights into the management of the patent portfolio of the University of Antwerp and to exchange best practices with the industry and other research institutes. The key take-away message was that students and researchers should be introduced much faster in the exciting world of patent databases to boost their research projects 📈 #WorldIPDay #IntellectualProperty
