ICYMI, Tram Hoang from PolicyLink shared powerful insights in a timely discussion on "Remaking the Economy: How Policy Can Help Tenants Purchase Their Homes," hosted by Shelterforce and Nonprofit Quarterly. She highlighted, "Housing and land exclusion are racialized in nature, sewn into the very fabric of our institutions, policies, and value systems. And we are in a fight to allow renters - who are disproportionately Black, Indigenous, and people of color - to collectively own property. So we are not just up against a billion dollar lobby, we are also working to shift paradigms of race and property ownership." There is a growing conversation about the role Community Land Trusts can play in municipal housing planning. Strong collaborations between local nonprofit CLT organizations and city, county, and state organizations supporting housing options for Washington communities are essential. It’s no secret that the Bay Area has affordable housing challenges. One interesting model for addressing this is a Community Land Trust (CLT). A CLT is a nonprofit organization that manages land and offers housing for the benefit of a community, enabling it to become stronger and more equitable. As one of the five nonprofits in OJCF’s Impact Together program, HomeShare Oregon advocates for collective shifts and innovative approaches to address the pressing challenge of affordable housing. Recognizing a need for innovative ideas, HomeShare Oregon believes that a collaborative effort is essential to pave the way for effective solutions. Most participants in HomeShare Oregon face the obstacle of limited affordable housing options, hindering their journey towards stability. However, HomeShare Oregon provides housing arrangements at an average cost ranging from $600 - $850 a month. This provides homeseekers with the essential stability necessary to enhance their lives. Following our presentation to HRM's Community Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee (CPED) on behalf of the New Roots Community Land Trust (CLT) North End African Nova Scotian (ANS) Community, myself & Houssam Elokda had the privilege of being interviewed by Vanessa Wright with Global News to discuss the origins and urgency of our work. In my interview I discussed the origins of this work and emphasized its urgency. It’s crucial to act now to prevent further displacement of our community due to gentrification causing rising rental rates and extreme land dispossession in community. It's crucial to leverage this land to begin to rebuild the ANS communities that were lost in Cogswell and surrounding areas through Urban Renewal to help resident return to their previous status of working class, business and homeowners. titles that were lost by thousands of anus individuals through this process. The Trust intends to use funds generated from this initial development for the Community Land Trust (CLT) to acquire land in the North End and surrounding areas where historic ANS communities once lived and thrived; to restore and strengthen our community to its previous status. We hope this work, when competed, can serve as a blueprint for other communities to duplicate elsewhere to begin to develop their own sense of ownership and equity. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress and how you can support this vital initiative. #CommunityDevelopment #AffordableHousing #UrbanPlanning #SocialJustice #HousingEquity #CommunityEngagement #Nonprofit #HousingCrisis #CityPlanning #SustainableDevelopment #CivicLeadership #CommunityEmpowerment #LocalGovernment #PublicPolicy #RealEstateDevelopment

On our recent visit to New York’s North Country, we heard that delivering essential social services can be a major challenge due to the area’s vast geography and low population density, and that the nonprofit sector plays a critical role in addressing this issue. In today's article, the authors detail how nonprofits support low- and moderate-income communities in both small towns and larger municipalities across the North Country. https://nyfed.org/4fgkz5Y
