🏖 🌅 At the beginning of the pandemic, my partner and I watched the movie, On the Beach (1959 film). Starring Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins and Ava Gardner, it was all about how people coped with large-scale catastrophe at the end of the world ...the film depicted people desperately and almost hysterically ignoring their reality. 🍷 🍾 🍸 🛍 The people depicted in this dystopian movie shopped, gossiped, raced cars and attended cocktail parties as though nothing was wrong. The movie and its characters seemed ludicrous to me... and now I realize On the Beach was a deadly accurate warning about how human beings react to crises. 🎥 🎞 I now think about this film all the time. It helps me to make sense of what I see and hear every day now. 🏥 😷 I recognize it is so hard for #Americans to wrap their heads around the deaths of 1,219,487 fellow Americans. That's 407 September 11 tragedies. The decision that so many have made is to simply pretend it didn't happen... to everyone's and every sector's long-term detriment. 🌬 Unfortunately, Canada has turned its back on #publichealth as well. #Canada has lost 59,034, more than died in WWII, and 3.5 million people are suffering from #longCOVID. 🙈 🙉 🙊 Pretending that the #pandemic isn't happening is destroying lives... #climateemergency #climatecrisis #COVID19 #H5N1 #measles #pandemicpreparedness #emergencyplanning https://lnkd.in/gRWpEH4T
