COMMUNITY RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Safe Water Together for Brunswick & Glynn County The Safe Water Together for Brunswick initiative, operating in the City of Brunswick, GA and Glynn County Board of Commissioners is dedicated to addressing environmental health and justice for all community residents and to co-develop solutions based on community experiences and scientific data. The objective is to implement a community-led local water quality monitoring program to identify impacts of Sea-Level Rise (SLR) near Superfund sites and advance community awareness of environmental water issues in Brunswick. The project fosters stewardship and enhances understanding of environmental impacts through community engagement, to inform policy decisions. The project utilizes advanced water quality detection technology to target microbial and chemical contamination exacerbated by sea-level rise. Aligned with the cleantech theme, the project minimizes emissions, optimizes data transfer, and integrates eco-conscious technology. Ultimately, this endeavor will improve water quality, address environmental disparities, and contribute to long-term solutions for a more sustainable and just community. Updates: 1. Researchers have assembled a group of citizen scientists to measure water chemicals and assess community needs. 2. The project has attracted attention from other universities and local governments seeking guidance on community-based water quality improvements. Cancel your productivity plans to read our new co-authored Environmental Research Letters study: Drinking water quality and social vulnerability linkages at the system level in the U.S. Led by Bridget Scanlon (The University of Texas at Austin Geosciences) with Sarah Fakhreddine, Rob Reedy & Qian Yang & me. Highlights: (1) Uses new dataset from SimpleLab, Inc. & Environmental Policy Innovation Center delineating CWS service areas throughout the CONUS rather than relying on county level social data for CWSs or excluding small systems, major limitations of previous studies (2) Considers all drinking water quality HB violations rather than focus on an individual/subset of rule violations or point-source contaminants. There is so much we are trying to address in the SDWA, the regional differences are profound, and confound a single, simple story. (3) Assesses linkages to many social vulnerability parameters relevant to drinking water rather than limiting mostly to economic parameters. Surprise, surprise the “DAC” definitions being rolled out for use in SRF+ plus conversations are only going to be marginally useful (4) Reinforces broad linkages between SES vulnerability and drinking water quality deficiencies. But moreso the complexity and variation in relationships depending on the water quality and vulnerability aspect. Via IOP Publishing. https://lnkd.in/gSARPegE

Sustainability starts with chemistry. I help organizations create impact by bridging the gap between science and strategy.
Early bird registration has been extended for the Association for the Advancement of Alternatives Assessment (A4)'s International Symposium this October in Tacoma, WA! Register by 9/22 to snag the early bird rates (even cheaper for A4 members, so make sure to join or renew when you register)! A new short course has been added for 10/24 so make sure register separately for this course! (cost = $60). Links below. This year's Symposium theme, "Enhancing Safety, Health and Equity" includes a special focus on advancing environmental justice and equity considerations in alternatives assessments. Although environmental justice has its roots in the United States, the concept is highly linked to social justice and related human rights issues that form the basis of global environmental and social governance (ESG) initiatives. The Social Hotspots Database Project aims to foster greater collaboration in improving social conditions worldwide by providing the data and the tools necessary for improved visibility of social hotspots in product supply chains. Symposium short course participants can expect to learn about: (1) key attributes applicable to alternatives assessments to evaluate social impacts of chemical/product manufacturing globally using tools such as social life cycle assessment; (2) how to use the social hotspots database; and (3) lessons learned from the instructor and participants to support evaluating and utilizing information about social hotspots to inform chemical selection decisions. #saferchemicals #greenchemistry #circularity #environmentaljustice

Environmental justice (EJ) is here to stay. That was a key message that Ramboll colleagues took away from Air & Waste Management Association’s “Environmental Justice: from Policy to Practice” conference. The effort to reduce disparities between communities in burdens and advantages between is not a passing trend. “Though the regulatory focus and the strength of EJ-related regulations is new, the concepts and social drivers underlying EJ are not new,” explains Sandra Sulsky, a health sciences principal at Ramboll who presented at the conference. Sandy and Ramboll colleagues Kun Zhao, Farzan Oroumiyeh, PhD, and Mikhil Shetty (Micky) presented at the two-day conference, and they also attended sessions and engaged with other EJ practitioners, industry representatives, and regulatory officials in attendance. “In the plenary sessions, I noticed a focus on the multidisciplinary side of EJ,” says Farzan. “Due to its complex nature, different organizations, communities, and governmental agencies have to work together to address EJ issues.” Discussions also revealed some emerging trends in how EJ is achieved. “There was valuable discussion about the evolution of EJ-related regulations in the US,” notes Micky Shetty. “While federal regulations are expected in the next several years, some states and communities are taking the lead in driving EJ plans.” Kun observes that “in addition to local and state regulations, there is a growing interest in community engagement and collaboration as well cumulative impact assessment and mitigation.” These observations will help guide Ramboll practitioners improve services to better suit the evolving EJ needs of clients. “The implicit goals of EJ are to improve health and well-being, but the connections between EJ and health/wellbeing remain largely inferential,” adds Sandra. “Ramboll’s health scientists have the technical know-how to examine the proposed connections.” Interested in having our experts help you achieve your own EJ goals? It's World Environment Day 2024. This year, the focus of World Environment Day is the restoration of the environment that is lost or being lost. There's so much to do. Restoring and conserving the world's resources to support an ever-growing population is a tough challenge that has the potential to affect all of us. As engineers, Fen Technology sees and understands the scale of the fight against ecosystem depletion and destruction. We understand the role that engineers have to play in contributing to the solution, providing insight and real workable outcomes. We think technology is both part of the problem and part of the solution. Just because something can be done doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea. So when designing a product, it pays to seek out the best approach at all stages. Like, does it make sense from an environmental perspective to power a device with a primary cell battery or can the product be repositioned to operate off rechargeable or energy-harvesting technology instead. Can the product be tailored to expand its market into new economies where environmental impacts are greater but awareness might be less at present? Are there marketing opportunities that can be exploited to alter your customers' behaviour and reduce the overall impact on the environment? Asking such questions early on in the development enables the product to be re-positioned to minimise the impact on the environment; it could also improve the marketplace's perception of your product and indeed your company. Fen is based in Cambridge, UK which is a fantastic place to be. So much innovation, so much new thinking. And it's encouraging to see all the efforts being made, by new players as well as old, to reduce our impact on the environment and innovate to leave the world a better place. What is your perspective on technology and its role? Is it the problem, the solution, or both? I'd love to hear how you've joined our efforts to steer product design in a responsible direction. https://lnkd.in/eZZRizQQ #GenerationRestoration #SustainableEngineering #BehaviourChange Fen Technology is proud to support Showerkap in its mission to conserve water and reduce carbon emissions, by encouraging more sustainable shower habits and improved environmental decisions. We've also loved helping Scarab Solutions create a product to better manage pesticide use, leading to a reduction in ecosystem impact from pesticide spraying.
