🏠 How do you end homelessness? One life at a time! 🏠 Our core programs and services are designed not only to meet immediate needs like food and shelter for unsheltered neighbors but also to help each person find their path to long-term self-sufficiency. We’re building a system of care that is changing the state of homelessness in San Diego County. For many living on the streets, finding the help they need is confusing. And shelter beds in the region are at 96% capacity. Operation Navigation is our solution to this crisis. By opening 3 more Navigation Centers across the County, we’ll nearly double our number of shelter beds. Once their immediate needs for shelter are met, guests will transition to longer-term housing or Mission Academy, our residential program downtown where they can rebuild their lives, like Cynthia did. Your support directly impacts lives through initiatives like Community Outreach, Navigation Centers, Mission Academy, Hunger Relief programs, and more. Stop promoting Housing First as the magic solution and start emphasizing the need for community-wide systems to reduce and solve homelessness. https://lnkd.in/g57idwpK We've been pushing Housing First on the public for over a decade, and it’s now seen negatively because its challenges were ignored rather than addressed, making it harder to scale. The public has grown to hate Housing First, and the truth is that Housing First alone cannot solve homelessness. We need a comprehensive approach: affordable housing, eviction prevention, shelters, outreach, and supportive housing, all working together. That’s how we truly end homelessness.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness recently released the results of new public opinion poll about how Americans view homelessness. Of the many findings, direct service providers and nonprofit organizations are perceived to be among the most trusted to handle the work that builds solutions for homelessness, but there is a recognition that these organizations don't have enough resources. Given that homelessness in the United States is currently at the highest levels in the history of record keeping by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, organizations like CaringWorks are more critical than ever in implementing proven solutions to end homelessness. Read the summary of the opinion poll at https://rebrand.ly/rqcwyge, and learn how you can be part of the solution to end homelessness by supporting CaringWorks at caringworksinc.org. #endhomelessness #caringworks

Homelessness across the U.S. increased a devasting 12% in 2023, according to HUD. That means an additional 67,638 fellow humans became homeless this year. And the numbers do not reflect those who are couch surfing or sharing a room because they can't afford one of their own. This unprecedented increase is driven by people who lost their housing for the first time. Housing costs are simply unaffordable for too many people in the U.S. At CHHOP, we believe in partnership. Nonprofits, community members, businesses and government leaders working together can make the difference. Help end homelessness and food insecurity today. Thriving individuals + thriving families = thriving communities. #housingaffordability #homelessness #thrivingcommunities #causes

Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson. The case aims to determine whether local governments can make it a crime for someone to live outside and unsheltered if they have no home. As this hotly contested case makes clear, the problem of homelessness is getting worse. Every year, more and more Americans experience homelessness—and cities and communities increasingly struggle to bring the crisis under control. What can we do? That’s a complicated question. But at SVDP, we believe the first (and best) solution is homelessness prevention: directing life-saving resources to people on the brink of homelessness. “Becoming homeless is a contingent event . . . not one that’s inevitable or irreversible.” Don’t miss our National President John Berry’s latest op-ed on SVdP’s groundbreaking solutions to the nation’s homelessness crisis. https://ow.ly/i5B450RvOJX It’s painful to recognize that neighbors often become homeless simply because of temporary money shortfalls. But it’s also inspiring — because it means that PREVENTING homelessness is often as easy as giving one-time assistance to pay a bill or make rent. As President Berry details in his article, SVdP chapters around the country run programs that are producing amazing results in preventing homelessness in their communities. He writes: “As more Americans realize the severity of our homelessness crisis, we have a tremendous opportunity to work together to restore stability and dignity to neighbors living on the brink.” To learn more about how you can join this lifesaving work, visit https://ow.ly/Z1lJ50RvOJU

Minnesota's housing problem hurts us all, even if we don’t see it on a day-to-day basis or live in communities with apparent signs of homelessness. When members of our community live on the streets or lack housing security in any way, the taxpayers pick up the bill. As former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan explained, "The thing we finally figured out is that it’s actually cheaper to solve homelessness than it is to put a band-aid on it. Between shelters, emergency rooms, and jails, it costs (the taxpayer) about $40,000 a year for a homeless person to be on the streets." But there’s good news. It would take fewer resources to end homelessness than to let it continue. As Shaun Donovan went on to say, "We learned that you could either sustain people in homelessness for $35,000 to $150,000 a year, or you could literally end their homelessness for $13,000 to $25,000 a year." Which sounds better to you? If you agree it’s time to end homelessness in Minnesota, join us at the Start with Home Rally for Affordable Housing on Tuesday, February 20. We’ll stand together and let our elected officials know we want sustained, long-term investment in affordable housing. Find additional details and register for the event by visiting https://lnkd.in/gT94fkWZ.

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Grants Pass ruling, a decision which effectively criminalizes homelessness, the McGregor Fund stands with leaders and advocates in the fight ahead for our unhoused friends and neighbors. The City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson decision allows jurisdictions to fine and arrest individuals sleeping in public, even when no designated shelter is available. This decision will place already marginalized populations at greater risk, disproportionately impacting persons of color and exacerbating existing barriers to acquiring permanent housing and other critical supports.
