Know what matters: From "Stupid" Name to $845 Million Exit In 2010, Tiffany Masterson, a mom of 4 children in her 40s, was trying to build a business by selling a multi-level-marketing product in the skincare industry. That venture failed. But instead of giving up she decided that she could do it better. So in 2012, she launched her own skincare line and called it Drunk Elephant. She even drew the logo herself while playing with her daughter. Many people hated the name. They told Masterson it was stupid. Even a person she wanted to hire refused to work with her because of the name. But Masterson didn't care what people thought of the name. She focused on making great products instead: an effective, non-toxic skincare line using only biocompatible ingredients. After getting the product right, she made sure it looked beautiful, from the product itself to the entire packaging. When she sent it out to beauty editors they simply fell in love with it. Masterson's plan was to get into Sephora - and she pulled it off within 1 year after launching. Sales boomed as word spread. Masterson also made sure of that by giving each Sephora employee their own Drunk Elephant kit to convert them into ambassadors in the store. Eventually, Masterson's big bet and hard work paid off huge: Shiseido bought Drunk Elephant for $845 million! The lesson? Unique names and logos don't matter as much as creating an amazing product first. Drunk Elephant proved skeptics wrong through excellence in product development, PR and sales execution.

Great USP ahead warning Having ruthlessly reduced the clothes I own/wear by pretty much two-thirds recently, a friend (Stuart Coleman) via one of his posts introduced me to the work of Stuart Trevor Mr Trevor is a man with an amazing fashion CV and is now a fashion brand based on reusing / recycling / reimagining / repurposing unused clothing. Being someone who loves innovation (rather than a fashionista I would add) I had to buy a couple of items. They arrived today. The T-shirts look fantastic but the one thing that really struck me was the label sewn onto the garments. Initialled by the business owner, dated and titled ‘Model’, Roger. Now this is definitely one way to make a middle-aged man feel good, a customer feel important and a little detail that will make me want to keep this item forever!! In a world of fast, instant and disposable everything, buying clothing that are reused is great and has genuinely got me thinking deeper about my own business USP and how we are different from other recruiters we compete with. I don't have a unique answer for you, but I do feel we are unlike other recruiters who have sales targets, call you every week or month, or perhaps push you towards a candidate based on their commission or sales goals. We don't do that at all, never have, never will. We want you to find the right person for your business and this means often it can take a little time to find the quality you want. It can be to our detriment sometimes as finding the right person isn't always instant, but we will always genuinely have your needs at the heart of the candidates we submit to you. Like the T-shirts that arrived for me, I think this USP will help you to enjoy working with us, and it's the little things we do that help build a long-term relationship.
