One not-talked-about-enough aspect of anime is its obsession with incremental improvement. Like the Japanese car industry, the majority of what gets produced is only a slight variation on formats, themes, and successes of the past. In 2023, nearly 60 new series were produced and at least 25 features according to my own casual count - many of which are finales or summaries of existing TV series. We can glorify the highlights. But in that list, there's also a lot of well... average stuff. So, with cautious underwhelm, here's the trailer for Studio Ponoc's Imaginary. What saddens me here is that we've literally seen every scene shown here before. Even though it's based on a 2014 British children's novel, all I see here are pale imitations of: Spirited Away Ponyo Boy & The Heron Castle in the Sky The Cat Returns Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends The recent Ryan Reynold's movie 'If' The Never-Ending Story And although the animation looks wonderful, as Studio Ponoc is made-up of ex-Ghibli staff. The character design feels particularly un-inspired. Feels like they're just doing exactly what they've done before, but for a different script. So the result is 'Kirkland Brand' Ghibli (for my Costco folks out there!). Anyway, I don't typically like to trash animation. And I'll probably skim through this to see what it's like. But, I don't know... I just don't feel the need to watch a compliation of what I've already seen. What does everyone think? #animation #cartoons #anime https://lnkd.in/dM8DbtPe

Words become visual artefacts. A creative tension has always helped raise the game as wordsmiths want to outdo “image-makers” (film) and vice versa. One medium that just blew away the limitations of live action storytelling with a camera was animation. That dynamic has always pushed both constituencies (writers and filmmakers) to push for a greater outcome. We are working on Disney’s Snow White (see trailer below) with passion and great reverence. This is a story from the iconic Grimm Brothers from 1812 (story number 53). Given the times, I think it’s a great message to the world: “Vanity will not take you far, but kindness will”! The Disney film Snow White was produced in 1937 and most people may know this was the 1st ever animated film (cel animation) produced in the United States. It cost $1.5 million to produce and made $418 million in the box office. It allowed Walt Disney to acquire the property on which the studio stands even today and has had a significant cultural effect, resulting in popular theme park attractions, a video game , a broadway musical, and merchandise! The 2025 movie is yet another tribute to the legacy of this evergreen franchise. We at #MPC are privileged to be the VFX house (a part of the #technicolorgroup) and cannot wait for the March 2025 release, 93 years after the pathbreaking original. Please see the trailer (link below) which on day 1 crossed 5 million views. #birenghosespeaks

For me, this one kind of came out of nowhere. But after a little research, seems this is one of those projects that survived the proverbial ‘development hell.’ 2003 - Original novel released. Late 2000s - Cartoon Network tries to do as a live-action/CG hybrid. Never happened. 2019 - Paramount acquires rights to make animated feature, Carlos Baena (an animation veteran of ILM and Pixar, but someone who never directed a full big budget feature) attached to direct. Mikros Animation locked as the production studio. 2020 - Baena replaced with Raman Hui (Monster Hunt, Monster Hunt 2 live-action director, and long time animation director who worked on everything from Antz, to Shrek (1 & 2) to the original Puss in Boots. 2020-2023 (?) Film completes somewhere during these three years, but the theatrical release is cancelled due to COVID-19. Jan. 16th, 2024 - 2 weeks before the Feb. 2nd release, Paramount drops the first trailer for a streaming release on Paramount+. Having said that, I’m impressed by the superstar mostly-Asian cast (Henry Golding, Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, Michelle Yeoh, Bowen Yang, and Elemental’s Leah Lewis to name a few). But, there’s also a certain generic flavor to this that seems a result of older material that’s gone through too many sets of notes, revisions, and creative compromises with what-must-have-been a less-than-Pixar-or-Disney-level production budget. As always, I want projects to succeed. But, the last minute trailer and lack of more extensive marketing does worry me a bit. And if I may offer my personal opinion, the whole ‘Let’s put the hero on the poster with headphones and a skateboard’ seems a little pandering. Has anyone else heard about this one? Am I being too harsh? Thoughts? #animation #cartoons

We're onto our third BTS episode for ARK: The Animated Series, in which we take a deeper dive at both the animation, as well as the characters of John and Alasie. A thing that trips up a lot of adaptation efforts is knowing what to explore. As always, it starts with character. For characters that already exist in the game, and with whom players might have a relationship, a really serious question must be asked—why include them in a series at all? There has to be something to say, a journey worthy of exploration. Fan service doesn't work; how many examples of this have we seen? Throwing a character in, just for the sake of it, will almost always lead to negative reception and a poor story. In the case of John and Alasie, we found a really compelling father-daughter story. That was the nexus around which the rest of the characters began to orbit, and the story justified itself—both in the writers room as well as on the page in script form. By doing what storytellers have done since time immemorial—listening to the characters and following them to interesting places—it actually *enhanced* our worldbuilding. https://lnkd.in/gxxTBcGq

Helping motion designers to build a successful business and career to give them freedom to do the things they love.
"We decided to make our own original content, so we could have control of the script and make the content we wanted to make" I interviewed HaZ Dulull about how he created his animation studio, HaZimation. They make and direct their own films and games. Haz used Unreal Engine to make and pitch films, one of those films was picked up by Netflix, and he also directed a series on Disney +. He's now directing cinematics for the new Dune game. ▶️ Watch the full video podcast on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eDJzN5kD What did you think of this episode? YouTube has really been breaking the mold when it comes to animation lately, in that rather than canceling and burying shows, or abandoning production altogether, it's become a space where creators have been able to thrive. Space has been carved for all sorts of storytelling in fact. Where else could you imagine seeing toy puppetry as a thriving medium? Certainly not traditional television/streamers. Here's a throwback to a series we did a few years ago with Spin Master for their #Batman toy line. Toy puppetry is so fun for someone with a stop motion background because a lot of the tools are the same, but so much of the visual language is different. Animation is all about cheating and getting away with it, and live action unlocks a whole new world of cheats. It's such a satisfying medium to play in, that I can't help but incorporate live action into Apartment Ds upcoming film. I can't wait for the world to see #RuffRuffDangerDogs! But in the meantime, check out Batman Toy Adventures! https://lnkd.in/gUj9kUZ5
