Only 2% of the homes hit by Hurricane Helene in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina had a policy protecting them against catastrophic flooding, according to an analysis by Politico and E&E News. If you’re in a position to help, personally or professionally, please do. The rebuilding efforts will take years for so many impacted. Avoid donating money to non-profits with large overhead. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today that certain Private Non-Profit organizations (PNPs) in Florida that do not provide critical services of a governmental nature may be eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans for damages as a result of Hurricane Helene that occurred on Sept. 23.   Eligible PNP organizations in Alachua, Bradford, Charlotte, Citrus, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton, Hernando, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Levy, Liberty, Madison, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, Suwannee, Taylor, Wakulla and Union counties may apply. Examples of eligible non-critical PNP organizations include, but are not limited to, food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools, and colleges.

Their flexibility and deep community ties make them essential for swift, effective relief efforts. While the impact of Helene was clearly covered by the media, and many of you have seen the terrible images and videos, the reconstruction and recovery will take a long time. American Red Cross: https://lnkd.in/g9vtSScp They are providing shelter, meals and support for evacuees across all affected areas Baby2Baby: https://lnkd.in/gRwhVCKF They are providing diapers, formula, and other essentials for infants and children affected. As you would imagine, the storm will also have long-term effects to the economy of these communities between the heavy infrastructure damage, lost wages, supply chain disruptions, etc. Short term, donating is the way to help, but I encourage everyone to think about long-term support, looking for opportunities to invest in or support local businesses rebuild, leveraging your skills to help local entrepreneurs get back on their feet, and eventually plan future visits once they are in a better place to help boost the local economy.
