The Elfra Court was Wildwood’s first Black motel. In its heyday, it hosted many famous Black entertainers who performed in Wildwood but were not welcome in its motels. Stars like Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Smokey Robinson all stayed there. This week, it received a historical marker at 119 W. We always found a way and we will continue to always find a way, no matter the circumstances. 💯 One of my favorite things to do while traveling is finding and researching local Black History landmarks. These sites usually contain info that’s rarely taught about in schools. This is a GREAT way to teach your kids Black History too, so that they can see where these events took place. It’s like a mini-field trip. Because yeah, our schools should teach this and we should demand it, but we can’t wait on them to get it right. There’s even an opportunity to do this in your hometown because there are so many sites that we overlook. Now, about Sarah Estell 🍦 👇🏾 “Sarah Estell, a free black woman in the slavery era, ran an ice cream parlor and sweet shop near here. She overcame the many hurdles faced by free persons of color, and her venture thrived. I’m SO excited to host Network While Black’s second event BLOOM: Separting Your Career From Your Identity on May 14th in NYC. Our inaugural event Network With Intention, was held in January. We brought so many amazing WOC (some men) together, and networked with people from all different fields. Bloom will be a little different. Although we are still emphasizing networking, on May 14th we will be discussing the importance of separating your career from your identity. This topic is very dear to me because as a Stylist in an unsure job market I’ve had to constantly ask myself what am I doing if I’m not working? I didn’t realize that because I’ve spent so much of my 20s chasing my career, that I didn’t know who I was when I wasn’t on set. This past year has been a whirlwind of emotions. Having a slow season in the industry forced me to think of myself as more than just a Stylist, and explore other interests of mine. Network While Black has been an amazinggggg venture for me, and I’m so thankful for this downtime because I was able to BLOOM. I now understand I am not my job, I am not my salary, and I am not just another Stylist. With that being said, be on the lookout for event details!!! DC Black Freedmen Stand Up! - Black American freedmen never fled for a better way of life or was ever given a hand up. We always worked for everything we had and stood ten toes down to WS. Situations like this, our towns being under highways, lakes, generational wealth stolen, and more makes the Black American freedmen experience extremely different from from everyone else. - This is why I correct and check anybody who come on here, making it about them or speaking so freely on our freedmen experiences. I have a firm understanding that someone being nice to me (and I’m still kind to everyone) does not mean they are friend and that my people have not lost generational wealth. I don’t care how friendly one is or act as if they are down. You are no ally if you don’t understand that Black American freedmen can have something to themselves. - Please remember God never intended for us to be fools. White supremacy did.
