Want to pay zero taxes? It’s very easy… 1. Get control of a 501(c)3 hospital. 2. Collect generous government subsidies. 3. Bill patients egregious amounts for care. 4. Use the cash to invest in anything you want (as long as you call it a “community benefit”). Pay zero taxes on any it. It’s a proven model that works for many.

How do we truly create diversity of knowledge on our nonprofit Board of Directors? I’ve served on a number of nonprofit boards and continue to do so and this is a question that is constantly in my thoughts. For example, if you’re leading the board of an educational institution, how do you ensure representation from single parent families? How do you better support single parents with the resources needed to be available to contribute to the board? Should the meeting time be changed, be held virtually or daycare provided? In a social service agency focused on aiding the unhoused, having a board solely comprised of individuals from similar backgrounds within the nonprofit sector might limit the scope of solutions. So how do you get professionals such as attorneys, bankers, or individuals from entirely different industries to inject fresh viewpoints into the mix? Does the nonprofit board regularly receive feedback from the unhoused individuals they have served or is there a person who has matriculated out of their program joined the board to provide first hand knowledge? These diverse perspectives will offer invaluable insights and approaches that might otherwise be overlooked. I’d love to know your own thoughts on this. #California #NonProfit #Insurance

Nonprofit hospices are being pressured into consolidation, which on one hand can be good for meeting regulatory standards, but on the other hand, if done improperly, can have detrimental effects on the quality of patient care. Navigating this environment is tough, and in many cases is going to require a financial approach that ensures resources are spent on organizational goals. There is a growing risk emerging out of for-profit organizations absorbing elements of a nonprofit space. #Nonprofit #Justice #Finance
