Pre-eclampsia is a serious and common pregnancy-induced condition which can occur in the second half of pregnancy. Symptoms typically include high blood pressure, sudden swelling, leakage of protein into the urine and rapid weight gain due to fluid retention. Although the exact cause of pre-eclampsia remains unknown, it is thought to begin with improperly developed placental blood vessels. There is also compelling evidence that in many cases pre-eclampsia has a genetic basis. Other possible contributing factors for pre-eclampsia include endothelial dysfunction, inflammatory activation and oxidative stress. Recently, the role of maternal nutrition in the aetiology of pre-eclampsia has gained increased attention. The similarities between pre-eclampsia and atherosclerosis suggest that the actions of dietary lipids, such as omega-3 fatty acids, may be of particular importance. Studies also support the hypothesis that supplementation of antioxidant nutrients such as selenium and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may be beneficial in reducing oxidative stress in women at risk of developing pre-eclampsia. Early onset pre-eclampsia has been linked to altered placental DNA methylation. There may be a link between choline as a major methyl donor and dysregulated placental methylation. Recent evidence has associated choline supplementation to a reduction in an anti-angiogenic factor that is elevated in pre-eclampsia. Published in Clinical Nutrition our recent article on enhancing the transition process for children with chronic intestinal failure on home parenteral nutrition as they move from pediatric to adult health care. Exclusive human milk diet showed reduced Lactobacillus abundance, though not significant post-adjustment. Colostrum, the first milk for a newborn, is packed with compounds that shape the gut microbiota at a critical time when it's just being established. Emerging research highlights the vital role of colostrum in promoting a healthy microbiota, which is increasingly recognized as essential for healthy growth. However, this is a pressing issue—globally, less than half of newborns are fully fed colostrum. Most of the evidence linking the microbiota to the prevention of undernutrition has been shown in juvenile or adult pre-clinical models, even though stunting begins before weaning. This latest study aims to uncover how colostrum and the microbiota it induces contribute to growth promotion. Addressing this could be key to better early-life nutrition strategies. We used National Imaging Facility (NIF) Infrastructure at Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis - The CMCA- Micro-CT imaging for quantifying White Adipose Tissue (WAT), Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) and bone analysis. James Barry, MD, MBA - Love your caring work! I think in its quests for understanding, HC focuses in on parts of the body divorcing itself from the whole, including nature and the universe. Bad nutrition is bad for all living things, including living things yet to be born. Feed any living thing crap food for which they are not designed to process and problems will emerge, yes? Can you believe robust nutrition courses are not taught in med or nursing schools? Neither is systems thinking that would allow physicians to take more of a holistic approach to working with the whole patient. I feel for caring physicians working in an evermore toxic industrialized HC system that focuses on maximizing profits at the expense of staff and patients. We can make things much better for physicians and patients through staff-led care delivery systems/workflow improvements. The caveat? Staff, too, will have to grow and change beyond what they are today. As Einstein reminds, "We can't solve problems with the same thinking used to create them."
