Favored today for its role in cocktails, tonic water was originally developed in the 19th century as a medicinal beverage, containing a high concentration of quinine, to prevent and treat malaria. Winston Churchill famously said: “Gin and tonic has saved more Englishmen's lives, and minds, than all the doctors in the Empire.” In today's tonic water, the quinine content is much lower, and it is no longer used as a preventive measure for malaria but rather consumed for its flavor, often in mixed drinks like gin and tonics. Food Safety: On 3/6/24, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), through product testing, determined that the several commercial ground cinnamon products contained elevated levels of lead. Cinnamon is used in, and on, so many food products. Prolonged exposure to lead is unsafe and can affect multiple body systems and is particularly harmful to young children and women of child-bearing age. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified lead as one of 10 chemicals of major public health concern needing action by Member States to protect the health of workers, children and women of reproductive age.
