I’m not a fan of ambiguous job title. Some examples I have come across: 🤨 Associate Vice President 🧐 Sales Senior Associate Director 😒 Technology Associate Chief Director 🥸 Production Senior Assistant Manager 😏 Accounting Senior Chief Assistant 😱 Chief Senior Officer To me, job title should be crystal clear to reflect the person’s job level and 80% of the roles and responsibilities. Similarly, career progression ladder (CPL) needs to be straightforward, simple, standardized and provide equal opportunities to all employees across the organization. How would you respond? About a year ago, I reached out to a “Director” level candidate about a Manager level opening. They were a Director at a smaller company. This opening was a Manager level with a larger company. I assure you in the grand scheme it was apples to apples. Like Gala to Honeyscrisp. I got an abrupt reply, no hello, no greeting, nothing cordial which said “That role is a step back, would waste my time talking about it” (fin). Ok Fast forward. I reached out to someone I know about this role as that client is hiring for the same level (new role). He said he knows someone looking. Guess who? That person emailed me saying they saw the description and think they are a good fit for the role and would like to talk about it. It is the essentially the same description with some nuance. Turns out he has been out of work for 4 months. How would you reply back? #candidates #jobs #hiring #unemployment

Unfortunately, the same applies to the project works in "most" organizations. 😅 Whenever the work is broken down and the focus is too much on roles and responsibilities, it tends to divide work, encourages working silos (individuals / groups) and handing off partially-done work. These lead to delays between hand-offs, longer time-to-users, as well as dissatisfaction due to conflict and poor sense of ownership of the value delivered. We need to innovate our way of working in the context of an organization. We may not (never) have the ideal space where we can safely fail, however, it's worth trying, within every capacity we have, to fail small, fail fast, recover fast and learn fast.

Just last week I had a hiring manager say these four words to me. “He looks great but…” “...he’s only got 4 years of experience, the job description says 5.” This hiring manager will no doubt spend the next 3 weeks trying to find the perfect candidate rather than the best candidate, which was definitely this candidate.
