From the hollers in Appalachia to the colonias in rural South Texas, rural America breeds innovation. Mainstream discussions about rural America often ignore or forget this fact, though. At PRT, we know firsthand how that feels & how to combat it - by simply getting real about rural. Check out our latest publication, "Innovation Is Rural," via @DailyYonder!

Rural isn’t a place to leave – it’s where swaths of diverse populations come and thrive. It’s where traditions are passed down from generation to generation, perseverance and dedication are valued above all, and a sense of community runs deep. Across American history, rural communities have led nationwide policy changes that improved lives around the country. Today, these rural communities stand ready to innovate once again. As politicians attempt to woo rural voters, a new report titled "Framing Rural: How language can help or hinder the case for rural investment", written by Katherine Lewis and Professor Tom MacMillan from the RAU, suggests that as long as the messaging is right, most people are open to the case for investing more in rural areas, rather than having strong prior views. Access the report here: https://lnkd.in/enMsjvBy
Framing Rural, a new report which launched this week, found people were more supportive of rural investment when it's framed around ‘levelling up’, rather than ‘singling out’ rural needs. The idea that essential services should be available wherever you live in the country was supported by 86% of people and opposed by just 2%. Read more about what helped people connect with the challenges facing rural areas in the report > https://lnkd.in/enMsjvBy With thanks to: Royal Agricultural University, Tom MacMillan, Katherine Lewis, Countryside and Community Research Institute

New research by the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE) finds that if the case is framed well, there is strong public support to ‘level up’ investment in rural areas, even among people living in towns and cities. NICRE Deputy Director Professor Tom MacMillan, the Elizabeth Creak Chair in Rural Policy and Strategy at the RAU, said: “As we approach an election, these findings suggest that most people, even in towns and cities, are potentially supportive of rural investment when it is framed engagingly. This research should give politicians of all parties confidence in putting rural issues and places on the agenda.” Read more here: https://bit.ly/3USYgKe

With all of the noise of erroneous and harmful rural narratives in mainstream media, a couple of my wonderful colleagues (Essence Smith and Daniel Elkin) and the Partners for Rural Transformation wanted to set the record straight. Rural resilience is not a myth, nor a hope for the future. Rural resilience is and has been the reality, despite unjust policies, resource extraction, and chronic disinvestment. Rural America is strong, creative, and is a vital part of our national economy, and deserves the respect and investment to reflect this. Read below to learn our perspective of rural that is rooted in strength, growth, equity, and innovation. https://lnkd.in/eyUnMuv4

How you say something makes much more impact than what you say. Here’s some interesting research about framing rural issues which proves the point.
