🌍 Celebrating World Environment Day at The Pollination Project! 🌱 Today, on World Environment Day, we at The Pollination Project are reflecting on the powerful impact of grassroots initiatives in driving environmental change. Over the past two years, we have had the privilege of funding over 250 projects dedicated to sustainability and ecological conservation. Our mission is to empower individuals and small organizations around the world who are passionate about our planet. These seed grants have helped to launch a diverse array of projects, from local reforestation efforts to innovative wildlife conservation techniques, and community recycling programs. Each project we support not only nurtures the environment but also fosters strong community ties, involving local stakeholders in activities that have immediate and lasting benefits. How Volunteers Build Social Capital    As Volunteer Week (16-23 June) draws closer, we’ve been thinking about social capital.     Social capital refers to the network of connections and shared values that enable cooperation, trust, and participation. When volunteers come together for a common cause, they build relationships, share knowledge, and foster a sense of belonging.    A study by University of Auckland* researchers Rose Gerelemou, James Russell, and Margaret Stanley investigated the connection between social group participation and social capital. The study found that members of community groups, particularly conservation groups, had higher social capital than those who didn’t participate in such groups.    Annie Dignan, General Manager of Pest Free Kaipātiki believes “that this research into the value of volunteering in conservation articulates what we experience amongst our volunteer network - the feel-good factors of social connections, shared purpose and a sense of belonging.”    This research highlights the value of fostering social capital through volunteerism. How Important are Volunteering Days? Our friends at HIVE CLEANING LTD | B CORP have created an amazing project with over 6 acres of meadowland in Devon which they have appropriately named ‘Hive Wood’. Their aim over the next 15 years, through this project is to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, enhance the biodiversity for flora and fauna and return the wood back to traditional broadleaf forest. CIWFM MIoD MBICSc, Hive Cleaning’s Manging Director, brought together an energetic team consisting of their family members, staff and clients as well as our Manging Director, Marc who was only too happy to get stuck in with the team helping to plant trees to support this fantastic project. #sustainabilitythursday News from our beekeeping project in the Mara! We're thrilled to announce the arrival of 10 kgs of pure honey, harvested sustainably from our thriving hives. This golden goodness, carefully packed into 20 500-gram jars, comes straight from the diligent work of Orkarkar, one of nine self-help groups championing honey production around the Ol Kinyei Conservancy. Thanks to the generous support of Gamewatchers Safaris, Porini Camps, and the WWF-Kenya, this initiative is buzzing with success. Back in 2021, the WWF's donation of 100 beehives, metallic stands, honey processors, chain-link fencing materials, bee catchers, and harvesting suits empowered youth and women, fostering conservation awareness while creating alternative livelihoods. Not only does this project provide economic opportunities for local communities, but it also plays a crucial role in conserving bee populations, thus enhancing the sustainability of the conservancy itself. But that's not all! Similar endeavors are underway in communities surrounding the Selenkay Conservancy. Thanks to our partners at the The Derek Moore Foundation, two women and youth groups are receiving vital support. Curious to see the impact firsthand? I learned a new skill - ‘Scything’ 🌾 My team had their annual volunteering day at Beetle Bank Farm today - every NFU Mutual employee is entitled to take part in one, and it’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, help local projects, and do some team-building! We had a great day, the weather was much better than anticipated, and although I’m probably going to ache like hell tomorrow, it was a very rewarding experience 🫶🏼 Here are some benefits to scything vs more modern techniques: 🌱It helps to protect biodiversity 🌱It promotes mindfulness 🌱It is less disruptive to wildlife 🌱It is easier to create habitat diversity 🌱It allows selective mowing 🌱It has better accessibility 🌱It has lower health and safety risks 🌱It is a good form of exercise Now I’m not saying that scything is an appropriate option for all agricultural needs, however it is making a comeback, and certainly has it’s own advantages for some forms of grassland management! #NFUMutal #Volunteering #GreatPlaceToWork #GrowWild #ScythingTheWay

🌳 We're excited to share an update from our Monday volunteering group, who yesterday planted a disease-resistant elm tree (an Ulmus ‘Columella') at Waterloo Green as part of the Public Metropolitan Gardens Association's Elms4London initiative. 🌱 This meaningful project seeks to reintroduce elm trees to London's green spaces - many were lost to Dutch Elm Disease decades ago. 🍃 By planting this resilient tree, we're not only enhancing the urban landscape but also contributing to carbon sequestration and air quality improvement. With the potential to reach heights of up to 30m and live for over a century, this elm represents a sustainable investment in our community's future. 🌿 But the benefits extend far beyond aesthetics 🦋 Our new elm tree will boost the Green's biodiversity hub as it supports the white-letter hairstreak butterfly ('Satyrium w-album') by providing forage for its caterpillars. Additionally, the elm's seeds are a vital food source for many birds and small mammals. This initiative showcases the power of collaboration between communities and environmental organisations in driving positive change.
