This is a personal post. I have never hidden my pride at being from officially 7th Greatest City in the World (Time Out - https://lnkd.in/evSmrM3X -) Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and Liverpool City Council should be rightly proud. Growing up in 1970's & 80's Liverpool, it wasn't easy. We didn't do ourselves any favours (sometimes we still don't) and there was a clear dislike of the City's militancy. That wasn't without foundation but, thankfully, in 1984, Lord Heseltine spotted the potential and reminded us all of the opportunity that existed. Although it's not been a straight line, the result today is we are 7th!! Some turnaround in 40 years. I'm also proud to be from #GreatBritain and to live in the #UK However, it makes me smile (with irony), when we see what is coming out of our Nations capital (home to the Mayor of London). Mr Khan may have won a 3rd term, but all is not well down South. The good news is that #London remains the 4th best City in the World in the same survey. But there are issues. Being in #financialservices, the effect of what is happening in the City of London Corporation area has an affect on my day to day #life and, precisely because "#money makes the #world go round" it is important that we have a strong and vibrant "City". Being a visitor for non-commercial reasons to London, it is also important that London's #nightime economy regains its mojo. As has been pointed out by Martin Murray, "I remember a time when Liverpool would have probably been in the bottom 7, and this turn in fortune is, in no short part, because of its great #cultural #nightlife, which is now a £5BILLION -a-year visitor #economy, employing around 51,000 people. Another great benefit to the North West is that great working partnership #Liverpool has with #Manchester. Imagine that, authorities working together for the greater good. If only other areas would follow the lead". 🔷 New System Since 1917: A Glimpse into Portland's Dynamic Past 🔷 Step back in time to 1917, when Portland, Oregon, was a bustling hub of innovation and industry. With a population of 250,000, the city's strategic location along the Columbia and Willamette rivers made it a vital port during World War I. Portland's shipbuilding industry was booming, driving economic growth and positioning the city as a key player on the national stage. But it wasn't all work and no play! The vibrant cultural scene flourished with theaters, music halls, and social clubs, making Portland a lively place to live and visit. The city's skyline was dotted with signs of rapid modernization, and the spirit of progress was palpable. Whilst for many whom are focused solely on economic growth and new emerging affluent communities this will be viewed as positive and a hoorah for all the investment that has been made by the money men. But for me with my critical eye it's a far cry from the lives of many local people for whom the gentrification and rapid development of the area is having a negative impact - on the very edge of these eye catching, grandeous developments are disadvantaged and neglected communities, that lack access to basic services, families already crippled by the cost of living being priced out of the area as fancy supermarkets crop up and more new developments threaten to close essential stores to replace them with upmarket artisan shops and apartments for young professionals from across the UK. Young people who lack access to basic spaces to play football as the local pitch is chained up and rented out to Premier league clubs for training and outreach. The same young people who are demonised and criminalised if they go over to Salford Quays looking for fun or something to do, who see all of this development and recognise sadly its not for them. The grim reality is that Salford has terrible mortality rares, already has poor air quality because of traffic which is only made worse by more commuters and is in the midst of a housing epidemic that has seen over 600 children forced to live in temporary accomodation, often in one room together with their family, without cooking equiptment, without any luxuries like televisions or even kettles, far from their friends and schools, as there is no adequate housing available and everything is too expensive. The crisis is so bad we have seen tents outside the town hall, people turned away from housing options and told to sleep in cars and on streets because they are not vulnerable enough. This absolute erosion of our health, our lives and our communities is one of the biggest contributing factors as to why we also have such a problem with Poverty and Inequality in the City. This picture and these statements for me are a stark visual reminder of the deeply entrenched Inequality we battle with daily. With every new development another chunk of our City is lost and the proud memories of our heritage and hardwork crumble to dust like our ancestors who built this City with their own bare and dirty hands. Theres nothing to celebrate until we are all thriving - not just the elite and the affluent. #Salford

Now "a living embodiment...to building a stronger, more inclusive Memphis for all" Tom Lee Park was once an empty field by the river, lacked amenities despite its prime location in a diverse neighborhood. How did it change? Through 'Gradual Placemaking' because although revamping a park is a lengthy and costly process it shouldn't be rushed with imposed 'cookie cooker' solutions. Memphis River Parks Partnership understood that to support change people need to see and experience their benefits. Over six years, they started small engaged the community, tested ideas, and formed local relationships. Gradually improving different parts of the riverfront, Tom Lee Park integrated itself into Memphis life even before it officially re-opened. Step 1: Pop-up Play - Riverside Drive road closed to traffic and became a lively public space with activities and basketball courts for three months. Step 2: Test and Learn - A one-acre site in the park added a climbing structure, yoga classes, and campfires, boosting its popularity by 200%. Step 3: Connecting the space - Various trails connected across the park to form a 5-mile path with clear signage for easy navigation. Step 4: Places to stay and play - After removing Confederate statues, an area transformed into a peaceful hub for people to meet for art, yoga, concerts, and sports events. It could host an event space for concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, along with a year-round farmers market showcasing local produce and artisanal goods. The waterfront location offers the perfect backdrop for outdoor dining, recreational activities, and scenic walking paths. So, what's holding us back? Why aren't we embracing big ideas for Mississauga's future? We need to challenge the status quo and prioritize ambitious, forward-thinking projects that reflect our city's potential. Let's adopt a bold vision for One Port Street and turn it into a landmark destination that everyone can enjoy and be proud of. It's time for Mississauga to dream big and deliver on those dreams. Vote for a BETTER Mississauga that thrives with creativity and innovation. Vote for a future where One Port Street becomes a symbol of our city's commitment to excellence and community spirit.

When the potential painters, actors, musicians and dancers of the future go to school they won’t find very much painting, acting, music or dancing on the curriculum. That means that unless those that care for them can pay for classes outside of school hours, they just won’t get to fulfill their potential. And when the scientists, mathematicians, lawyers, accountants, politicians etc. of the future look up from their screens, data, targets, policies, etc. what will they see? How will they feed the parts of them that need to be nourished by beauty, laughter, fantasy, poetry, colour, ideas, fresh perspectives? Children who can’t express themselves and a workforce who are depressed without soul food. Really? How can that be a good idea? We are going to look back and see what a huge mistake this is for our society. We need to champion and support the arts in whatever way we can. I offer very reduced rates for coaching those working in the arts. They need all the help they can get right now.

To convert Summerhall into apartments or student flats would not only strip away a crucial cultural asset but also diminish the unique character of the community.
