This graph shows a huge disparity in the way the Defense Dual-use world sees investors. The # of deals done does NOT correlate with size of deal. So while it makes sense those at the top are doing more deals, it also makes sense they are early stage VC’s who have to do volume deals to spread out risk. Those at the bottom who are doing lesser # of deals, are inversely, doing bigger amounts per deal. The point: DoD thinks massive amounts of private capital are flowing into “defense dual-use”—->> the truth is, earlier stage companies are getting deals done (more done later half of this year) but the money is still consolidating around the extremely late stage opportunities that investors see as “de-risked.” The cool opportunity for investors: Come to the series C+ world, where traditional capital is weary of risk, but the real defense capital operators know how to manage the risk & deliver a real growth #notallinvestorsarealike

Less #planning and more doing are key part of being a geek, it is important to reduce the over planning and allow room for #iterations to show value. Putting over emphasis on planning, without iterations can be seen in the results achieved by traditional space company like NASA versus SpaceX. On June 13, Hacking 4 Defense presented their capstone project to the SpaceWERX team at THE BR-DGE, located in El Segundo, California. These hands-on programs immerse student teams by having them test their business model hypotheses outside the classroom. The i4NS Rocket Racer project team from University of California San Diego, a Minority Serving institution, was asked to present their proposed solution to the problem statement: The United States Space Force and SpaceWERX need a technology to make discovering and evaluating relevant emerging technologies of non-traditional small businesses easier, as well as to attract innovators by marketing their offerings. Maj. Jareth Lamb, SpaceWERX Space Ventures branch chief, and Melissa Garmoe, SpaceWERX acquisition program manager, were problem sponsors for this presentation. Space Ventures works with industry to identify, mature and accelerate capabilities. This investment creates pathways for innovators and private capital investors to help advance USSF technologies.
