As we reflect on this significant milestone in our nation's history, we also recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion within our engineering community. The engineering field thrives on innovation, creativity, and collaboration—values that are enriched by diverse perspectives and experiences. Let's continue to build a future where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to contribute and succeed. To commemorate this day, we hosted an enriching session for our employees, featuring informative videos and educational trivia. I can’t recommend this program more! Not only is it led by Nick and his incredible team trubel&co, but the course content is more relevant now than ever! As an alum of the MIT Online Science, Technology, & Engineering Community (MOSTEC) (now MITES) from 2020, I was one of the first students to take Nick's course, Mapping Justice: Geospatial Tools for Social Change. Now, four years later, I'm revisiting the arcGIS skills I developed during that time for my thesis work at Harvard. My joint thesis research in neuroscience and philosophy aims to investigate the activation of the reward system—focusing on the orbitofrontal cortex and ventral striatum—and its role in resilience against PTSD among Black women, further examining how experiences of racial discrimination modulate this activation. For my research I am using arcGIS to create and apply existing geocoded neighborhood variables related to discrimination including residential segregation. In today's world, where access to data is expanding rapidly, learning arcGIS is becoming increasingly crucial. This tool not only helps us present data effectively but also enables us to address the social issues it highlights. Therefore, I highly recommend this course to any high school student.
