Can we stop overthinking? Several years ago, I had a colleague in another office who would occasionally visit London. They possessed an exuberant personality, often smiling at strangers and sometimes even striking up conversations. Despite my attempts to dissuade them with the London rulebook, they would greet people at the tube station or a shop and then share the encounters with me, finding amusement in my horror. I had a bit of a lightbulb moment about them yesterday as I read a book by Andrew Salter, a clinical psychologist who introduced behaviour therapy. Salter classified people as 'inhibitory' and 'excitatory' personalities, asserting that most problems arise from being inhibited in life. “The happy person does not waste time thinking. Self-control comes from no control at all; the excitatory act, without thinking. The inhibitory think, without acting and delude themselves into believing that they are highly civilized types.” Embracing an excitatory approach, much like the colleague I mentioned – expressing oneself without overthinking – can foster positive connections at work. The simple act of a smile, a friendly greeting or a heartfelt thank you can create a ripple effect that enhances collaboration and teamwork. If this does not come naturally, doing it often enough will turn it into a reflex action! #mindset #leadership #smile #cbt
