On a mission to rid the world of rogue apostrophes and unfortunate typos | Freelance copy-editor/proofreader for fiction and non-fiction books, plus business content
Today’s top tip from Corten Editorial This tip is on which verb to use alongside ‘was’/‘were’ for an action done continuously in the past, and it’s one of the more straightforward rules to remember. The common mistake is adding the simple past tense of the verb alongside the ‘was’/‘were’ (e.g. ‘I was sat’); this would only be correct if that action is done to you (e.g. ‘I asked the waiter for a table, and I was sat at the smallest one.’). Instead, it’s actually always the form of the verb that ends with ‘ing’ (which you’d use to describe the task being done continuously in the present) that’s added to ‘was’/‘were’. Going back to my previous example, this would be ‘I was sitting’.
