Whereas houses and baths have been studied for a long time, the analysis of windows and their functions was often neglected and has been the subject of only a few articles. This book aims to summarize research results and close the gap of research regarding methods of window and shutter construction and their features. We are visually cataloging and inventorying! Many of the documents are close to 100 years old! Introducing the US Building Industry Collection, curated by Interior Technology Inc. It is the largest collection of antique and vintage building industry and building codes/standards books in the United States. James J. Gibson was an important thinker in the realm of visual perception, yet was probably best known for developing the concept of the ‘affordances’ within our environments, meaning what our surrounds offers that are either helpful or not.   With perception, he explored the relationship between people and their surroundings, based on - their perceptual cone of view - linked to single point perspective and geometry.   Building on this concept, British landscape architect Clifford Tandy developed the concept of the isovist, which is the volume of space - that is visible by an individual - from a given location in space.   The isovist is one approach that can be used to describe spatial properties from a person-centered perspective, which importantly ties back to a view of sensing architecture specifically from the vantage point of a person and their body, moving through space.   This view contrasts with a cartesian/abstract experience of architecture and space, separated from a beholder-centred perspective.   The concept of the isovist can be expanded beyond just sight, to encompass all of the senses we use to experience the spaces we inhabit and move through.
