We’re thrilled to announce that Bard High School Early College received the 2024 Grand Prize Award for Adaptive Reuse from Learning By Design Magazine! Congratulations to DC Department of General Services and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and our collaborators MCN Build and CMTA, Inc.! Bard High School Early College is the first early college program in DC located east of the Anacostia River. With a mission to increase access and success in higher-education among low-income and historically underrepresented communities, the school provides a tuition-free college program of study. Upon graduating, students receive both a high school diploma and a free Associates in Arts degree from Bard College. Our modernization provides a cutting-edge facility that promotes academic excellence and supports the school’s mission and vision, while simultaneously establishing new standards for sustainable urban school design. By collaborating with the school, government, and community stakeholders, our renovation and addition proves how Net Zero Energy can be achieved with existing facilities through small, impactful strategies. Did you know over half of all U.S. public schools are in need of renovations, the cost of which is estimated at nearly $200 billion? But how can jurisdictions make the case for investing in school modernization, and what guidance is there for designers and school districts to effectively spend the forecasted billions of modernization dollars to achieve their core mission of educating children for life in the 21st century? I’m so pleased to announce there’s new research available to help! I teamed with some amazing colleagues at Perkins Eastman and Drexel University to conduct the “Addressing a Multi-Billion Dollar Challenge” study, sponsored by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows #LatrobePrize and J+J Flooring. We found that modernized schools outperformed non-modernized schools in a statistically significant manner across multiple factors. #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek continues! Knowing that 20% of students, faculty and staff are neurodivergent - a shift is needed toward a more inclusive culture in all campus settings. From classrooms and labs, sports and fitness spaces, to libraries, student common areas and cafeterias – designing spaces that address all physical and mental needs is critical. Access to natural light and the inclusion of biophilic elements were central to the renovation of St. Charles Community College's Life Science Building. The transformation gave them the teaching environment they needed to foster student success. Fifty-nine years experience as a landscape architect, urban and recreation planner, design educator.
Am embracing the authentic listening skills and empowering engagement that Beth deploys in all her work! Having been a landscape architect teaching architects mostly at the BAC from 1972-2012,I can identify w/ being the Duck sans water! My natural science Id wants to tout diversity; in the natural world it is the hedge against extinction, through robust diversity of gene pools. In the climate change design world we have to see our roles anchored , in the context of difficult ,multivariate conditions. People work, education, organizational leadership, playing the long game for replacing all coastal infrastructure to adapt to sea level rise… big stuff to plan, design, fund and execute prudently.

Running for the 2026-27 President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture is nothing short of an honor—a chance to celebrate the voices of each one of you and the students whose dreams we champion. 🪺 In 2012, I shifted from a decade at Rafael Viñoly Architects to embracing the world of higher education, navigating missteps, celebrating triumphs, and cultivating a steadfast commitment to what I now understand as transformational leadership. 🐦 At times, I've felt like the odd duck in the academic pond: my institution has no tenure system, a reliance on part-time adjuncts, and a heavy administrative load for most full-time faculty, myself included. If you've ever felt awkwardly perched on the fringes of the mainstream, I see and hear you; it's a weight that both bears down on us and propels us forward. ▶️ Enter ACSA—my involvement has been driven by a passion to amplify the voices of students and faculty whose experiences are as diverse as the institutions we serve. ▶️ ACSA represents over 7,000 architecture faculty, guiding the education of more than 40,000 students from a spectrum of institutions—large and small, public and private, urban and rural, spanning 2-year community colleges to 4-year pre-professional, and accredited professional programs. ▶️ Every faculty member, be they full-time, part-time, or adjunct, plays a pivotal role, spearheading critical pedagogies in a world saturated with uncertainty. Breaking through the noise together is the good work of a lifetime! — Thank you for your consideration of me and the incredible people I serve through the Boston Architectural College American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) The American Institute of Architects (AIA), Coalition of Community College Architecture Programs (CCCAP), and NOMA #advocacy #designeducation #architectureschool #transformativelearning #transformationalleadership #teachingandlearning #architecturestudents #futureofarchitecture #blg4acsa

Schools (K-12) are arguably the most important building type we create. They represent not only institutions for learning, but they help to define the communities they serve. It's important to build them right. If you're in the Portland, Oregon area, this in-person learning opportunity is not to be missed. #SchoolConstruction #ResilientDesign #Schools
I am very excited to announce an upcoming symposium on September 27th at the historic McMenamins Kennedy School. This one day event is focused on K-12 school construction in Oregon. We all want healthy and safe buildings for our students and educators, and that starts early in the planning process. Join us for a day of connecting and learning about sustainable and resilient school design! From an overcrowded challenge to a sustainable, forward-thinking solution, the transformation of Parkway School District’s McKelvey Primary Center (Parkway Schools) makes for an inspiring case study of collaboration for high performance design. Functional multi-purpose spaces were a priority for the District and our detailed evaluation of existing facilities and programmatic requirements helped them apply this vision. Four additional classrooms and three additional special education classrooms were added to the original project, including a future-proof design to accommodate expansion. In our shared mission to improve academic performance, we agreed on measures to improve comfort for end users of the building like students, faculty and staff, alongside conserving energy and reducing life-cycle costs. We also made sure that project met the Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings whenever possible on the existing building and as a minimum requirement on all new additions. #fgma #pk12 #elementaryschools #ParkwayProud #StLArchitecture #StLSchools #WeBuildCommunity
