ADAM Architecture are proud to support an insightful new report on 20-minute neighbourhoods, published by Dr Husam AlWaer, Reader in Sustainable Urban Design at the University of Dundee, titled 'Understanding the 20-Minute Neighbourhood: Making opportunities for people to live well locally'. Delighted to support alongside Urban Design Group, Sustrans, Corstorphine & Wright, Hilson Moran, Proctor & Matthews Architects and SURF - Scotland's Regeneration Forum. It is intended for anyone who wants to improve their understanding of the meaning and implications of 20-minute neighbourhoods. The guide takes readers through key considerations for a 20-minute neighbourhood strategy. This includes the following ideas: • Understanding and articulating the desired outcomes that politicians, planners, architects, urban designers and other decision makers want to achieve. • Correctly assembling the means – mechanisms, levers, triggers and causal factors – necessary to produce a 20-minute neighbourhood. • Defining changes and behaviours for successful 20-minute neighbourhoods, noting the concept's diverse interpretations and priorities, tailored to specific contexts and circumstances. Led by the University of Dundee and Dr Husam AlWaer B.Arch, MRTPI, Ph.D, BREEAM AP, AoU, UDG, this collectively produced report provides timely guidance on how to deliver 20 Minute Neighbourhoods to all professionals within the built environment. Our employees Hal Mellen and Alessandro Venerandi noted 4 main takeaways from the launch event at the V&A in Dundee on the 19th April: 🏢 Densities ranging from 50 to 90 people per hectare (depending on connectivity) are necessary to establish the critical mass needed to support facilities within a 10-minute walking radius. This equates to roughly 25-45 dwellings per hectare. An achievable target but higher than the typical delivery of house across the country. ✨ It’s not just about quantity, quality is important too. There is no benefit in living close to doctors’ surgery if you can’t get an appointment. For this reason, qualitative assessments must be tied to quantitative ones in the delivery of 20 minute neighbourhoods. 🏘️ Achieving 20 minute neighbourhoods in rural locations can be difficult since there won’t be the critical mass of people needed to support certain facilities. In these instances, villages and hamlets should be grouped and connected by high quality active travel infrastructure and public transport links. ↩️ Feedback loops are essential for delivery. Unless a public body acts as an arbiter for the policy and tracks progress towards its achievement over time, walkable places that support sustainable lifestyles won’t be realised.

Cities for People by Jan Gehl - Jan Gehl has contributed to the global transformation of urban environments for over forty years, drawing from his studies of how people use and could use their living and working environments. Gehl showcases his most recent creations of human-scale cityscapes in this ground-breaking book. 3. The City in History - Mumford advocates for a world where technology finds harmony with nature rather than taking control of it. His ideal city is akin to a "organic city," where culture coexists peacefully with technology advancement rather than being subjugated by it. Mumford draws a comparison between these cities and others built on tyranny, conflict, destitution, etc. 4. A Pattern Language - The 1977 book A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction discusses architecture, urban planning, and the livability of communities. 5. Today we officially launched an international pattern book design competition allowing architects and architecture students from around the world to design the future face of Sydney and NSW while speeding up the delivery of new homes. Housing remains the single biggest cost of living pressure for people across NSW and this competition will mean the winning designs used by developers will have access to an accelerated approval pathway. The accelerated pathway will allow builders to have homes approved and built faster, providing homes to those who need them sooner.
