Jobs are easy. Ownership is not. This is the difference:
I had my first job at 12 or 13 years old. Camp counselor. And I’ve worked ever sense - busboy, barista, deli counter, waiter, construction, gym, prep chef, auditor, law clerk, and in-house counsel. In most cases, I worked hard. Some of the work was laborious. Some work was more demanding from a cognitive standpoint. Regardless, I was tired by the time I clocked out.
That’s the difference.
At some point in the day, I clocked out. Every job has an end point. That is, a point in the day or week or month that you can turn off the switch. I knew that I could always walk away and apply elsewhere. Or quit because I was going back to school.
Ownership, though, has no off switch. Sure, you can build a great business, hire a dynamic team, and delegate like hell. But no one starts a business, builds it into something meaningful, and abandons it. Because getting to that point takes every ounce of your fiber. And walking away or checking out for an indefinite period of time is a non-option.
