In every HR recommendations list you can face point: research every sources about employer. Research website, social media and etc. Recently I wondered is it really helpful for us as developers. Of course marketing specialist can find some information about SMM channels and communication with users, or how brand positioning itself in market. Of course C-level employee can find long term goals. But what developer can find scrolling through website or social media of company? Something about development processes or values? Maybe, but it's really hard to understand what is a real and what is just a marketing. Sometimes you can find roadmap of product, but can you be shure that you will work on this product if company develops some of them? Or can you be sure that roadmap correct and updated? I have had a lot of times same scenario: * I research a lot of sources about company. * Come to an interview with some guesses, based on my research, about how I can help company to achieve goals. * Find out that my guesses mostly irrelevant for real company cases or some of the goals was so far from implementation that company just doesn't need my help in the near future. But guess where I have got real cases and pains of company? In a dialogue with hr, manager or developers. Moreover through dialogue with developer or manager I can feel how comfortable I am about our communication. For me it's first priority. And if so do I really need to spend time for research irrelevant sources just to answering the question "Do you know something about company or product?" say "Yes"? What do you think? Did you have success cases when research helped you to get position?
