BREAKING NEWS: Employment Rights Bill Confirmed in King's Speech In today's King's Speech, the King stated that the government would "legislate to introduce a new deal for working people to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights." This legislation will be part of the Employment Rights Bill. While full details of the Bill are yet to be revealed, it is likely to cover a number of the workers’ rights pledges contained in Labour’s pre-election manifesto: * Day one rights for unfair dismissal, subject to a probation period * Making flexible working a default right from day one * Enhanced redundancy protections for employees on or returning from maternity leave * A ban on employers ‘firing and rehiring’ staff under less favourable terms and conditions. * A ban on exploitative zero-hours contracts * Improvements to statutory sick pay and the minimum wage * Reform on collective redundancy consultation meaning employers must count staff across every location * Greater protection for whistleblowers * Repeal of the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act, which allows some employers to compel employees to work during a strike. * Changes to trade union engagement, allowing members to use secure electronic balloting. NB However we need to wait for the draft legislation before we know what the Bill will deliver. #employmentrights #employmentlaw

The King announced yesterday that the Labour Government will legislate to introduce a 'new deal' for working people, to ban exploitative practices and enhance employment rights. ' The specifics remain to be seen but Labour's pre-election promises include day 1 unfair dismissal rights, restrictions on fire and rehire policies and zero hour contracts, and a reform of employment status. There is also a commitment to legislate to regulate the use of AI in the workplace. As Caspar Glyn KC, Chair of the Employment Lawyers' Association, comments in People Management, Labour's pledges, if lived up to, promise to bring about 'the greatest changes in employment law in more than a generation.' #ukemploymentlaw #ela #employmentrights #kingsspeech

1moWe look forward to understanding in more detail what this seismic shift to employee right will entail. In my opinion this creates opportunities and risk. It’s interesting people are not discussing potential downsides. We don’t want to make the UK an unattractive place to create new jobs. This could be an unintended consequence of the employment rights bill. I look forward to the opportunity for a wide consultation with unions, employer groups, CBI, CIPD. This is an opportunity for a great partnership to achieve productivity and growth.
