I leapt at the opportunity to attend two Naloxone (Narcan) training sessions this past week, first, in Hillsborough County presented by my esteemed colleague, Melina Santos, MPH, CBHC, and another in Pinellas County with the revered, Dan Zsido. While both presentations covered much ground, I want to mention some basics: 👉🏼 What is Narcan? Narcan, or Naloxone, is an opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. 🧠 How does it work? Narcan/Naloxone reverses the effects of opioids by binding to receptors in the brain. This blocks the effects of opioids and restores normal breathing. 🌍 Why is it crucial? With overdoses on the rise, Narcan/Naloxone empowers communities to act quickly to save lives and bridges gaps until professional help can arrive. 💡 How can you get it? While Narcan/Naloxone is available at local pharmacies, it can be picked up for free at any department of health (DOH) location throughout Florida. Understanding the complexity of the overdose crisis is essential to making impactful changes. The typical individual who succumbs to an overdose today often battles with the use of multiple substances, such as fentanyl combined with stimulants like cocaine or methamphetamine. Despite significant investments and advancements in care for opioid users, we still face a daunting challenge in curbing overdose fatalities. A crucial missing piece is addressing the needs of those who co-use opioids and stimulants. This is where comprehensive education tools, like Heal-O, become indispensable.
