In product management, the goal is to create products that people truly need and want. This means listening closely to customer feedback and understanding their problems to develop the right solutions. It's not just about making things; it's about making things that matter. At the same time, you learn to prioritize by identifying the most important issues to address. This involves figuring out which customer problems are the most pressing and focusing your efforts there. Steve Jobs once said that focusing means saying no to many things so that you can concentrate on what's truly important. In essence, product management is about solving the right problems and choosing wisely where to direct your attention. #productmanager #product #careers #productmanagement

I get a lot of questions about "what product management is like" as a career progression. And while, yes, seniority in product management roughly equates to "years in role" and "size of company", it's just as important to realize that this usually equates to "I've seen this situation before, and know what to do with it" and "I know myself well enough to know how to handle this specific situation at this specific time". Most product management tools, methods and techniques are the same across experience levels, and of course, knowledge of those is imperative for successful product management. But, I tell those new to the industry that growing as a product management means putting yourself (or being put into) into situations that help you learn who you are and how you handle them. There's really no substitute for putting in the time.
