Did you know that India's female labor force is lower than that of Pakistan? I left my cushy IT job in 2014- Because it lacked flexibility and work-from-home options! In 2004, the women's employment rate peaked at 35 percent, Only to drop to approximately 25 percent in 2022. Today, as India races ahead, outpacing China in terms of population growth, It's sad to see the declining participation of women in the workforce. Achieving gender balance within any organizations has not been a conscious priority. Hiring men, because they seem "committed", have contributed to the low representation of women. Here's what you can do to empower women and create a more inclusive work environment. 📚 Educate our women 🤱 Provide maternity leaves without guilt 🏢 Create safer and friendlier workplaces 🙅♀️ Avoid judgment By actively implementing these changes and championing gender equality, We can create an environment where every woman's potential can flourish And contribute to the progress of our nation.

The low participation of women in India's labor force is largely due to gender discrimination in terms of wages and opportunities. India's female work participation rate was just 25% for 2021, according to federal government data, among the lowest for emerging economies. Despite efforts to improve gender equality in the workplace, women still earn considerably less than their male colleagues and remain under-represented at senior level.   The global pay gap between the sexes stood at 50% last year, according to the World Economic Forum. Yet improving workplace equality also has its benefits for employers. A 1% gender bias effect at a Fortune 500 company that hires 8,000 people a year can lead to productivity losses of about $2.8 million a year, found a recent study from Oregon State University. On the occasion of Women's Day and Month, we delve into the role of familial norms in restricting women's entry into the work force. In India, nearly 80 million households are intergenerationally extended i.e. 'joint' families. My colleagues and I find that in joint families, the loss of a father-in-law is associated with a 24 percent increase in the daughter-in-law's labour force participation rate. Our research highlights the need for more gender sensitive workplace policies and shifting the gender attitudes of joint families in India. #genderjustice #socialnorms #labourmarket One Health Trust
